Car Advice, Let's spend someone elses money

One of my former staff is a young single guy who works all the time so has no opportunity to spend his hard earned cash.

He has an Infinity G35 on lease that is coming due.

He wants a new sports car. It would be a lease. He'd love a Carrera 4 but that's to steep for him. He's thinking Cayman. Would cost him $5k down then $1200 per month for 24 months. That's about the top on the spending limit.

What else could we interest him in?

He's open to suggestions.

Tell him to do what I just did... pick up a nice used Boxster!

I got a 2001 with only 40k on the ticker for 19k.

You can lease a certifed car through a dealer.

What about a Lexus IS350? 4 doors, 0-60 in 5.6.

After two years, it'll be worth less than that...

Oh, like the ONLY way this guy will have wheels at all is to lease? And he MUST spend $33K? I'm just a wee bit puzzled here...

Sounds like $30k is the top end, the lease may be a business situation.

FWIW I thought 997's were under $900 a month on lease.

What's the confusion? He wants to lease, not buy.

No one said he had to spend 33k, he doesn't want to spend 33k either.

He will spend the money to drive something nice which is the point of this thread.

Let me rephrase it so it's clear.

If you had up to $1,200 a month to spend on a lease what would you get? Spending less would be preferable.

What's the best bang for the buck?

Vetts are leasing very cheap, if you like them you'll get a ton of bang for about half that buck.

Buy a $5000 Subaru Legacy or other cheap reliable car, stuff $1200 a month into a CD for 24 months and in 24 months sell clunker for $4000, cash out CDs and pay cash for a nice 993 and drive something nice for a long long time with the knowledge that it is paid for (which btw makes it even nicer).

Sweet Baby Jesus.... I just don't understand how people can drop $1,200 a month on a friggin car. That's just crazy.

I think that $1200 is perfect absurd as well, but then again, we don't know the guys monthly income.

Still, who cares if you bring home $20K a month, its still a stupid waste of money.

He can lease my 1980 SC for only $1000 a month.

I just have to get it to the shop tomorrow cause it won't start. Still, once that's fixed I'm sure it'll be fine.

Says the man with the Ferrari.

OK,

Let's forget the 1200 a month.

You want to lease a fun classy car, don't care if it's 2 or 4 door, no cabs. What are you looking at?

Honestly, I think Alf has the best idea - except the part about the Subaru. Go get a used Honda etc. They handle well, are fun to drive hold their value very well. Then go buy a Porsche for cash!
