Karma baby!

So after a year of Pelican OT bashing the iPod karma bites me in the ass big time...

The top item of my 10 year old son's Christmas wish list is a new iPod Nano. Not a mp3 player...an iPod, preferably in black, cause they are the bomb!!

So I shuffle (no pun intended) into the Costco and walk out with a silver (second choice) 2GB model. Hey, if my Sony walkman was good enough for me in high school than 500 songs on a digital player is fine for a 10 year old.

So on Christmas night I'm trying to get the glorious iPod up and running for Christmas morning. I download the latest iTunes and install. I connect the iPod via USB to our home PC and, of course, no dice. No drivers, malfunctioning USB device error message. No love from iTunes. Reinstall iTunes and try again. No dice. Consult the iTunes help forums. Repeat 3 times - now O'Dark thirty.

After the third re-install iTunes see's the iPod. HORRAY!!! By default iTunes has all 12GB of my music checked for iPod synch so that fails after 5 mintues of loading. Disonnect iPod and restart iTunes. CTRL-A (thanks for that) all songs and uncheck the synch box. Then plug in iPod. Sync made no problems...there is a God.

Start checking the songs my son wants, all heavy metal, absolutely no Country, and click the iPod icon. iTunes freezes as does the iPod. After 1 hour I uplug iPod and do a reset. Restart the dead iTunes and re-sync. All is good again.

Kids are up in a couple hours so lets make sure all is good. Hit the Sync icon again and all hell breaks loose. Repeat my last steps and fall into bed for a quick 2 hours of sleep B4 kids wake to Santa's gifts.

Since then I have been unable to get iTunes to sync to the iPod w/o a complete restart. It only works the first time up. If I try to resync a second time both iTunes and iPod are very unhappy. So much for that vaunted Apple software...

I remember being 10...I was thrilled to have a 5 tube AM radio as a Christmas gift....walked to school 4 miles through the mud of unpaved streets too...uphill both ways! In the 8th grade year, I was still pining for a 45 rpm record player, the kind with a record stacker/changer. Are kids today spoiled?

Well, I've plugged in various thumb drives, an external USB hard drive, and 3 different digital camera's all w/o a hitch. So (*edit* what ) makes the iPod so special...?

I was so ready to get a pink Nano for the wife but now I'm thinking screw this mess and go with the Zune or eq.

Stick with the iPod; once you have the bugs worked out) not that I've had that experience using the iPod on my Mac) you won't be disappointed.

My family has 4 iPods. Never, ever a glitch. Not one. But then, we all use Macs...

I started the iPod bash a year ago when my buddy (also a PC user) went through much grief getting is 60GB video working while lots of folks here were drunk with Apple/iTunes joy. Turned out to be a faulty iPod unit and it took weeks for Apple to replace. Since then he's had recurring issues like mine and experienced a dozen or so iPod lockups. This Christmas he purchased 2 Shuffle iPods for his kids and ... one worked immediately and the other is giving him the same problems.

These units are really just glorified USB flash/disk devices with a very nice UI. I'm just angry that they don't behave like the simple USB device they are.

Family has four ipods, no issues syncing like anyone else has described. And unlike Moses, three of the four are using PC's.

Do you have Norton on your PC?

Too much noise in the world. I sometimes prefer solitude.

No Ipod, No MP3; my only concession is a CD player in the workshop with classical music and Dave Brubeck type of Jazz when the mood hits me.

I have never had a problem with any of the 3 ipods I have. A mini, and two Nanos. I have a pc and not a Mac. I thought I was having an issue with the nwest itunes, but it was retarded user error. As the 911 has an Alpine ipod controlling stereo installed, I absolutely love it for the long interstate commutes, in town and on the curvies I listen to the sweet 6 and sound of the boost coming on.

On a side note, my company gave out 4gig ipod nanos out to some of us with our logo engeraved on the back. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. Mine is still in the box and I don't plan on using it till my other one craps out or i give it to my daughter.

Good luck.

I've had the 30GB iPod for about a year now and still only have around 750 songs on it. It has jammed up on me twice, where it just freezes and no buttons work and the display stays lit up until the battery runs out. There are some quick fixes you can find online for such things and they worked for me.

I got my ex a nano and it froze after the first fill. It eventually ran out of power (like Rick), then worked. I sent her the instructions for a reset (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705) and it has been fine ever since.

Do you know where I can get some of those little yellow plastic thingies so I can play my 45's on my turntable?

You remember these things, don't you?

Of course, we didn't have plastic ones when I was a kid. We had to carve them out of wood. And if we ran out of fire wood for the old wood burner, well, you know what happened to the adapters...

I had a very similar experience with my nano. I even ended up replacing my PC because of my antiquated USB ports. Thing went haywire when I plugged it into my work PC.

Ditch iTunes, get AnaPod and you will be happy.

Call me crazy but I'm not excited about buying another PC to correct Apple issues. Our current PC is plenty modern (P4 3.2, 2GB Ram, USB2.0/Firewire, etc...). I think I have all issues resolved other than the multiple sync = ipod/itune freeze. I'm gonna try the Anapod route as I don't buy music from iTunes.

Oh and we're running, for now, AVG, not Norton AV...

+1

David, a close friend of mine had a very similar experience to yours (minus the kids). After much Googling, she found Anapod and has had no problems since.
