good stuff from both sides,
I have family members in Germany now, who tell me horror stories,
but I once got a VA appointment , 1 1/2 years from the date I placed the call.
Some of my crew declined insurance...yet they are the ones buying the Xbox for the 5 year old, and then need a pay advance to pay for medicine.
The system is broken, but alot of folks have figured out ,
they can't turn me away,
whats one more collection agency,
and in Texas medical bills cannot be factored in your credit application.

Here's the url for the quoted article:
http://www.gladwell.com/2005/2005_08_29_a_hazard.html I get back to you after I've read it thoroughly.

Okay, that didn't take long. Unfortunately, Mr. Gladwell didn't bother to support his opinion piece with any hard data, i.e. what healthcare isn't available to the uninsured population, and so forth. He does quote older opinion pieces, including at least one nearly 40 years old.

Here's the real truth about his article. It's not just mildly inaccurate; it is a monumental, baldfaced lie. What this really is is just more class warfare, by those wishing for more government mandated "equalization" among people. Leveling at gun point. Or just plain, more government.

Mr. Gladwell could give lessons to neocons.

+1

Dottore is just an ignorant liberal. You should just ignore him. That's what I've done for the past 12 years and it seems to work. Ooops. Here he comes. Gotta run...

What if an elderly person on fixed income requires a hip replacement, and doesn't have the insurance to pay for it?
The state pays through welfare.

What if I want to have a proper check-up once a year - but I'm on fixed income and can barely put food on the table - and I'm uninsured?
Free clinic.

What about people who cannot afford the proper medication to alleviate pain or treat serious disorders?
Free clinics will give out free sample packs(lots of them), and in many cases the state will also pay via welfare. There may be people that 'fall through the cracks', but i suspect in most cases it gets paid for by the state.

What about all of those who are not insured and not eligible for insurance who require expensive treatment of some kind?
The state pays via welfare.

So when I say there are millions in the US without access to basic healthcare - I am perhaps using to high a standard. But it is a standard that in my view any developed nation should offer its citizens.
For the record the state does not "offer" anything, the state charges for all services via taxation. There is no such thing as 'free healthcare', because someone is always footing the bill, and that someone is the US taxpayer.
