Last pheasant hunt of the season
Those of you that read my post a while back know that Buck was not doing so well. I went home for Christmas and we got him out in the field. He is a tired old man but I know he had a good time. My friend Mike has a Brittany that he is training and I think Buck may have taught him a thing or two

Excellent! Pheasant is great on the grill, just don't overcook it!

Glad your hunt was good with your old friend. Looks like you have another good partner in the wings (no pun intended).
I just got a Vizsla puppie (8 weeks) and would like to train him to hunt, can you recommend any books/ DVDs that would help me?

Good for Buck!
nothing like a seasoned vet to show the new pup what to do.

I'm sure Buck really enjoyed his time in the field, probably took him back to his youth. Wish we could all do that.

I can tell you that some of the best things you can do are to get a dummy and Ty-wrap some wings to it. then throw that around so your dog gets used to the smell and taste. After a while hide it under some brush then tell your dog to "go find the bird." When he is doing good with that (not chewing not playing tug of war etc) find a captive breeder, you can buy live pheasant for less then 10 bucks each. The breeder can explain how to set the birds and what not. You will need to teach your dog that if you miss the bird he cannot chase the damn thing for the next 3 miles across private property and god knows what else. Another useful training tool when they are young is some wings tied to a fishing line/pole. we used this alot when our setters were pups to get them used to the scent and "action" of a bird. When they got older we swithed to a dummy. It also a good idea to use a starter pistol so they get used to the shot after the flush.
