Need computer virus help...
I guess all that porn surfing bit back today. My homepage always defaults to www.eprotectionline.com. I have run my Norton and AdAware scans a few times since this happened and they come up with nothing. This makes me suspicious, since the AdAware always finds something, even if I run a new scan minutes after I last did it. My homepage URL in the "Internet Options, General" tab is www.hotsheet.com, which is a news site. But still, when I click on the homepage icon, I get the www.eprotectionline.com and it drives me NUTS!!!! How to fix this since Norton and AdAware aren't coming up with anything? Please help! Thanks.

Prevention is the best defense, eh?
Now that you have the problem, getting rid of it may be a task. Don't know what your internet setup is, but it sounds like you've been hijacked. There are some excellent forums at www.grc.com and I would refer you there for help. Meanwhile, add these to your toolkit: Spybot: http://www.spybot.info/ Spyware Blaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ Several useful and free utilities: www.grc.com Once you download the tools and update the databases, you probably want to do your fixes with your internet connection disabled and at least two reboots with malware scans before restoring the connection. There was a German product (WebWasher) that was fantastic and free for home users. Think they got bought and it's no longer free, but.... After you get this cleaned up, I also suggest you move to something like FireFox if you're using ie. You also need to update and lock your hosts file.

Get off line as all your data is at risk. Any keystroke you have ever made on you PC can be found. Get a new Security Software..Norton or McAffe..update it to today...then pick a date before U were infected and reconform your PC to that date..it wipes out anything U did after that date. Apply the new Security Sofware, scan and you ARE CURED.
Its all in the Firewalls... I guess its better that your PC gets HIV than U....

Spybot did the trick. Nothing important on this computer anyway. It's just personal stuff.

Well....
Don't stop there - this crap is pretty insidious. Go out and d/l a copy of Hijack This, run it, and PM me. You'll want to save the output to a txt file so you can look at the various entries.

Spybot is a good program and I'm glad it caught this problem, but you are *not* done. Take Icemaster up on his offer. Get your system clean - or better rebuild from scratch - and Lock It Down(!!) and get on the GRC.com boards to better understand the problems and solutions or you'll be back revisiting this with perhaps a bigger problem that isn't cleaned so easily. BTW: Spybot setup - go to the SBI tabs and uncheck the entries (3, I think) for items to ignore.
