Grady,

My wife just took a call from her teacher and our daughter is one of the top three and will be going on to the regional finals. :D She couldn't or won't tell us if she was 1, 2 or 3 because they will announce it at an upcoming student assembly. So they want it to be a surprize for her and us.

Her teacher said the judges were impressed by her knowledge of the proceedure, her personal interest in the subject and the presentation of the data.

As for as the amount of time to conduct and complete it all, we've actually known since school started that she would be doing a project this year. Her school alternates years so she won't be doing one next year, but will be the year after. The clock really started ticking on Sept. 26, which was the first meeting with the parents/kids/teachers. We were given a handout which explained what was required and expected of the kids and the role of the parents. We turned them in on Jan 5th.

When we move up to the regionals, we will be allowed to revamp the board. We will probably change the graph from a x/y line graph to a bar chart. This was suggested by the teacher. I suppose we could weigh the balls but it wouldn't be accurate as the helium ball has leaked several psi. Also the judges were impressed by the "release device". I was kinda of proud of that one myself.

Paul,

Congratulations! SmileWavy

To your daughter and all that support her.

These are the steps for her to be an intelligent, responsible and independent person. Good for you guys.

A kid I helped with wrote a Nature cover paper and she and I still laugh about how I changed her diapers at Porsche events almost 40 years ago (my first experience at that delicate task).

Aah life. :)

Best,
Grady

The results were read at last night's open house in front of the entire school. She was smiling so much her face hurt. Now it's on to the regional finals.

Regionals at the local University.

Grady, I tried to PM you and it bounced back and said your box was full.

Grady Clay 01-27-2007 08:47 AM

I leave my PM box full. I can only handle two mailboxes; email and snail mail.
You can email me at gradyclayathotmaildotcom (you can get this on my Profile).

"Regionals at the local University."

When? Is there enough time to repeat with improved proceedure?

Best,
Grady

URY914 01-31-2007 11:24 AM

We're not going to do the proceedure over but we're going to revamp the board and data in a little different format. We'll use a bar graph, reduce the pictures, take out the video camera info, etc. And we need to drill her on the Q & A.

The rules for the regional are a little different.

URY914 02-14-2007 11:14 AM

Grady,

The Regional judging was Monday and the results were presented last night. There were 52 in her group and 5 superior awards were given out.

She was the 5th name announced for Superior. What a cliff hanger!

Wow, what a trip...

Gotta start thinking about next year now.

Both, wisea$$.

nostatic 02-14-2007 12:27 PM

feh. whatever. I get pretty tired of seeing "student" work at my son's school that is obviously 97% parents. Not saying that is the case here, but figured I'd ask the question. Do whatever works for you...

URY914 02-14-2007 04:54 PM

There were some projects that were diffenty kid's ideas. Anything with "Popcorn" in the title is a safe bet that the kid came up with it. But some were a little over the top for a 3, 4 and 5th graders that is why the judges quiz the kids.
