WTH? GM wins car and truck of the year awards
Gotta be some serious payola going on. How can GM POS vehicles win otherwise.

I'm looking into buying a new truck. The new Silverado is light years ahead of the models offered by competitors. I'm probably going to hold off a year until the 6-speed is available.
From a truck perspective, this award is spot-on.

And precisely what would prevent an American manufacturer from getting a product award? Are we so enamored of foreign offerings that domestics are dismissed out-of-hand? Some of the worst cars I have EVER owned were European and some of the best were (gasp!!) Ford products!! Egad!!

The thing I found most interesting was the headline "GM outpaces Toyota on hybrid tech " in the number 1 spot. Linked to the article below.
http://money.cnn.com/blogs/autoshow/2007/01/gm-charges-toward-electric-future.html +1 on Moneyguy1's comments. Some people just love to hate the US autos based not on current reality but on old, old, perceptions....

I guess I posted this due to my own experience with GM vehicles. I had a brand new Silverado a few years back. Basically fell apart in 7K miles, tranny, A/C, fuel injection system, etc. Bought a Tundra and it was "lightyears" ahead of the GM. Maybe they are getting better, maybe quality control has improved, maybe they are more reliable. I don't plan on putting my cash down to find out. Glad this is America and I have the freedom to say what I desire, and buy what I desire. Glad some of you have had good experiences with your Fords and GM's...

18 months ago my wife spent her $10k severance coupon from GM ($10k towards a GM car purchase) on a Vibe...which is a Toyota Matrix/Corolla with a Pontiac badge, manufactured at the NUMMI plant in CA. It was the only GM vehicle she was willing to trade in her Toyota Tacoma on.
Considering she worked as an engineer at the proving ground here, that's a pretty telling statement.

Award is spot on indeed. Such a huge improvement over the past truck. And an improvement on the already very good Ford lineup.
No comparison to the past.

I've seen silverados with a quarter million miles on 'em still running strong. I have never seen a 'bad' Silverado, or any inherently 'bad' American pick-up. The closest i can think of is some of the early nineties Ford F-150s that had the known bad rear end issues.
I dare say you got an atypical example. Can happen with any car(have a friend that just returned a new lexus cause of all kinds of problems) The only pickup i've ever owned personally was a toyota. I had that until the motor blew up when it had 150k miles on it. It was an ok truck while it lasted, but it was a total dog. No power at all, and it was even a 5speed. It was also a total rust bucket. |

My wife has drove a Tahoe for 2 years, then a trailblazer for 2 years and most recently a Denali for the past 3. All have been trouble free.
I'm considering the new GM pickup and have no hesitation based on quality. - Skip

A coworker just bought a Silverado (OK, it was last fall) because they took $10k off the sticker price. He got a $27k truck for $17k. Kinda hard to beat a deal like that.
My father-in-law just sold his Silverado and bought a Tundra. And he works at a Chevy dealership... My ex-wife's brother bought a Tahoe a while back. After one week of normal driving, the engine locked up. Had it towed back to the dealer only to discover the engine only had 1 quart of oil in it. One week. Mike

In the 1500, they've beefed up the frames, put in better engines (which will shut down cylinders on the highway), put struts up front, and rack & pinion steering. Next year, when the 6 speed tranmissions come out, they will get even better gas mileage highway cruzing and towing.

I never liked Miatas, though my cousin loves his(supercharged 1994). In that class i like the S2000/Boxster/Solstice much better. |

WWII is all the evidence i'll ever need that the US can build vastly superior machines than the Japanese.
