Please for the love of all that's holy, help me with this HP Desktop!!

The idiots in India can't.

I bought this new computer. It takes 5-10 min to connect to the internet (if at all). I thought it might be a network card issue so I bought another. Seems to have the same issue. Here it is:

- When started "cold" (i.e. off a few hours) the network icon appears in the system tray with a yellow "!" and says limited or no connectivity.
- If it has been on a few hours and I have not been using it, "sleep mode" same deal.

Sometimes I can repair the connection and get it to work. Not always.

I have done the following:
- Reinstalled the Network card drivers
- Uninstalled the virus software (the HP support said I should - was using PC cillin - sold to me by best buy)
- Done some other system checks, but can't find anything amiss.

I'm convinced it's somekind of hardware issue, but they won't belive me. I have been on the phone right now for 41 minutes and finally ended up losing my cool and screaming at the 4th tech that has tried to help me. They are supposed to be getting me a supervisor. I can't take it any more. Please help me.

Do you have DSL or Cable? If cable, have you tried to unplug the modem from the wall (power) wait five minutes, then plug it back in. Make sure the computer is off as well. Have you tried to assign a static I.P. to the computer?

Dave

Cable. I don't think that's the issue since my laptop connects with no issues.

Do you have a router/switch between the modem and the laptop/desktop? Cable modems learn the MAC address of whatever plugs into it. Only way to clear the modem is to unplug it.

Do what Dave said above then this below.

Go to the hardware devices and see if you have the yellow ! in front of the network card. If you do you will never have a connection.

If there is no yellow ! there, then go to network connections then find the icon for the Local Area Connection. Right click on it and then click on disable. Wait a minute then do the same thing but this time enable it. This will force it to establish a new IP address and sometimes this helps.

Let us know what happens after this.

Joe

PS I can write this in Indian if it will help??!!

Yeah I have a router. I connect the computer to the router. The ISP has the MAC address of the router.

The HP people actually suggested to me that I reinstall my OS. I asked them if that would wipe out all my data (pictures, music, etc) and they said it would. WHAT?!?!?. That's a non starter.

so this is an hp tower or laptop? is it a new or old computer? new network card? do you mean a new pcmcia card for a laptop or new ethernet card for the tower? do you have the correct and most updated driver for the os you're running installed? it is ethernet connection and not wireless, right? Do a google search on the model you are having problems with and the specific error message. I've solved every single computer problem I've ever had that way.

New computer...bought in November. The issue was there from the start, used to be a few seconds, but got worse. Old network card (what came with it). I bought a new card, but the issue persists.

Legion, I can't search on this model and the issue, because I get no real error message. The computer is too new, I'm still finding people selling it at this point.

Yeah, I'm on it now. What you suggest is sort of like the "repair" connection thing, right?

This issue only seems to happen at startup or when I come back after the sleep mode/energy saver goes on.

Nope, not the repair. Tell me if there is a yellow ! in front of the device, and if not then disable it, wait a minute then re-enable it. Then wait a minute and see what happens.

You should get connectivity then BUT you need to have tried to reset your modem then router before doing this.

I assume that you have tried a different piece of Cat 5 cable?

Sleep mode shuts the ports down. Disable sleep mode if its a desktop.

The idiots at BestBuy told me not to buy a Dell because if something went wrong I'd have to ship it back. But when something is wrong with this POS, I have to pay Bets Buy for them to look at it. ****!
