Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.
I laughed out loud this morning when I read this. It seems the flywheel generator, (affectionately referred to as the gererator by Pelicans) is a short-burst emergency standby device. Think of it as a battery and it makes more sense.

Typical single-flywheel systems are intended for standby power applications. The Smart Energy Matrix flywheel design proposes an integrated system of 10 higher-power (25 kWh) flywheels, interconnected in a matrix to provide energy storage for utility-grade applications.

I'm sure I read about a Ford Pinto with a large flywheel that would be engaged on braking, and then used again for acceleration. What could possibly go wrong?
