The Holy Roman Empire....

...was neither holy, nor Roman.

Discuss.

at one point ruled by a dude born in Ghent , Flanders

Charles V son of Philip the Handsome and Joanna the Mad of Castile.

what's in a name eh....

but the city folks rebelled, and he sort of got back at them in a nasty way...he got medieval on their ass

all in all , it was your average power house of nobility, where noble is best taken with a big grain of salt...

I have a coin in my hand from Constantine II as we speak. Found in a large cache in Serbia. Probably stashed during the disasterous fighting between Constantius and Magnentius in the mid 3rd century.

Re: The Holy Roman Empire....

This is about to get ignorant. I can feel it...

Anyone read Gibbon's "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"? Its going to take me another month to finish on the plane going back and forth to work each week and in the airports. It's not a fun book to have to carry around. It's a ton of info to digest, and a lot of it will need to be revisited as I get further along. I'll probably be ready for this thread around March

Of course not. Its good to have goals, tho

For me, the most memorable part of the Gibbon's book so far is the chapter about how after murdering the current emperor around 200 AD, the Praetorian Guard sold the empire off in a public auction to a new emperor, and then murdered him within 60 days. I think Im up to about 400 AD or 500 AD so far in this book, and 60 days seems to be about the average lifespan of a new emperor.

Probably not. But Asterix and Obelix are fun.
