Old .44 shotguns?

I was at my fathers last night and he showed me a couple of .44 shotguns he picked up as well as a single shot .410 and a 12ga ss.

I imagine shells for the .44 are nearly impossible to get?

Really? That's what I said but I'm no expert so I went with what he said. He got them off gunbroker. I'll see what other info I can get.

I think he said they used brass casings and a wooden plug to contain the shot

I never heard of a .44 shotgun either. If you find out more, please post it for the rest of us gun-nuts.

OK I stand corrected. H&R made a .44 shotgun, single shot in the early 1900's. Pricey ammo if you can find it. I would think loading you own in brass carts would be the only answer.

The 12ga is an "Iver Johnson" pre owl plate.

Would that be the boxlock Hercules grade? I am not familiar with the term owl plate.

I have no idea what "boxlock Hercules grade" means, but I believe the pre-owl-plate is a timeline thing. Apparently they started putting a plate of some type (owl) on the guns at a certain point.

It has a really neat "loop" in front of the trigger that you pull to open the breach. It's a neat looking gun.

the marbles gamegetter was chambered for a .44 shot cartridge.i think also a superposed .22 barrel too. they were available with a 12' barrel which got to be an illegal length barrel back in the thirties.
i think i have a couple of .44 shot rounds somewhere, if i can find them and get a close range camera i will try to post some shots[bad pun].
