Sushi -- LA, this sounds like the place to be
Wow, a friend of mine who is a well trained sushi chef sent me this review of Urasawa's in Beverly Hills. Wow. I'm Jonesing for some sushi now.
http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/2006/12/railroad_trip_u.html I hate to give anything away, but the bill at the end of the article is $452 which includes, food, a bottle of water, a bottle of alcohol and taxes (but not the $100 tip). I've told some co-workers about it and they just don't see how food could ever be worth that much unless it starts and finishes with a "happy ending". Sadly, I can definitely see paying that much for a night of sushi bliss. Actually my buddy had my wife and I over last night and made us a 10 course sushi meal (main course was about 8 different kinds of nigiri). It was amazing. He made Edo and Kansai style sushi. He's mostly a purist preferring traditional style, but occasionally likes to throw something less traditional and/or of his own creation in. We started eating at 8p and finished at around midnight with fresh homemade kiwi sorbet. Damn, I've been ruined for ordinary restaurants and in the last year or so my tastes have matured so that the stuff that I like keeps getting more and more expensive. I'm going to have to get a second job to support my eating.

hmm, that's about a 10 minute drive from me. Have to go when my budget stops bleeding. That should be in a couple months or a couple of decades...not sure which.
Hide is 5 minutes from me and about 10% of the cost though... |

When the craving for sushi hits, it's difficult not to get in the car and go!
Unfortunately the only sushi places I really like are in town. Steve, know of any good ones on our side of town?

I dunno. I've been pretty happy with the $25 plate of sushi and sashimi at my favorite local place. The crazy-expensive place in DC, called Kaz, is still less than $100 a person and out of this world good. Maybe the premium is because the chef there is also licensed for Fugu fish.

Just had it for lunch. Will save the $452 style for when someone else invites, would rather put the money into the car fund.

I don't even particularly like the stuff, I can take it or leave it. I know the guys who own Koi on LaCienega, (former Drai's location), they made so much $$ in their first year that they completely paid off their investors. It was almost like being cocaine kingpins in Miami in the '80s, they had a hard time counting all the money.

On our side of town there's not much that's good. There's the Tokyo Bowl on Bay Area. I know lots of people like it, but the atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired. There's a new Tokyo Bowl near my work at Cullen and 518 that's pretty good and a much nicer, bigger place. There's a new place on Bay Area just north of Space Center called Hoshizuna. It's pretty decent. My wife has had Chirashi (fish on a bed of rice) there a couple of times and liked it. I had a great bowl of Katsu don. She was there for lunch with a friend once when someone asked for "crab puffs". The owner said something like, "that's not Japanese food so we won't serve it here." I think that's a good sign. I'll definitely eat there again.
