Bad day on the 5 Freeway

Yesterday the 5 was backed up for quite a while. Appearently there was a multi vehicle (big rig) collision with this poor guy got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

don't see any blood, so must not have been too bad, or could have been worse.

KevinP73 01-24-2007 11:51 AM

There really isn't much blood to see, just a couple drops on the sun visor but I hear the driver is in critical condition.

When ISN'T it a bad day on the 5 freeway?

Noah930 01-24-2007 11:56 AM

No airbag? Best of luck to the driver.

KevinP73 01-24-2007 12:02 PM

Lack of airbag deployment surprised me too. Sometimes, depending on the direction of the hit these things don't go off.

Kevin,

At first I thought that was your truck!

Can't tell you how glad I am that it's not!

JavaBrewer 01-24-2007 01:13 PM

Aren't there crush cans in the front bumber that set off the bags? The front looks untouched. Doubt a frontal airbag would have done much/anything to lessen the blow...

KevinP73 01-24-2007 01:34 PM

The only damage to the front of the truck is from the Fire Dept. using the jaws to open the hood and cut the battery cables.

911pcars 01-24-2007 10:45 PM

Front air bags deploy when the frontal sensor is exposed to a certain deceleration rate. A side hit wouldn't do it. If the 150 had side or curtain air bags, the side sensor would have deployed them.

F150s are pretty tall vehicles. Wonder what hit him?

I spent last weekend driving between Anaheim and San Diego on the 5 and I can't believe a day goes by without a huge pileup. Cars are only 10ft apart, traveling at 85mph+ and everyone is on the phone! It drove me nuts and I was glad to leave, except the MI weather part...

A semi collected him as it jack knifed. He went partially under the trailer.

A few years ago I posted a thread about cruising back from Universal Studios to San Diego on I-5. EVERYBODY was cruising 95 mph, and like you said, only about 10 ft. apart. I remember I had a young girl in a little Honda on my butt for awhile wanting to pass me. The first chance she had, she passed me at way over 100 mph. The next day there was a news report about a tanker accident above Camp Pendleton that held up traffic for 5 hours. I avoid that stretch as much as I can.

I have been driving in Puerto Rico for the last three days, and can tell you they make the drivers on the 5 look like Grandma's and Grandpa's.

I worked in Puerto Rico for about 3 months and I'd pull up to a traffic light, single lane road each direction. Someone would then pull along side of me on the shoulder, so they could pass. Sometimes, someone else would then pull to the right of _THEM_!!!

WOW, that must've hurt, hope the driver gets better. Kevin your not gonna try to fix it, are you? :)

Hoepfully the driver has the same luck my wife has. Years ago she totalled out her Mustang. Accident was with an 18 wheel truck. She escaped with three broken finger nails.

Rob, your wife must have one amazing guardian angel. That is scary to even look at.
