Smile (New car) Huge thanks to Denver Pelican Jeremy! (snow & ice storm pics)

I've got to send out a huuuuuge thanks to local Denver pelican member Jeremy (Gogar), for his awesome help in checking out a 1990 964 C4 cabriolet for me this week in Denver. Lots of locals volunteered, and I thank all of you for your offers, including: Scott R, BSiple, calling911, Hetmann, SLO-BOB...hope I didn't leave anyone out..I got lot's of nice replies from you guys.

Anyway, Jeremy took several hours to get together with the seller, go over the car, took a couple dozen pics, gave me a thorough writeup, drove the car, etc. I've made a deal to purchase the car and am flying into Denver tonight. With any luck (weather), I'll be able to start the drive back saturday night or Sunday morning. I'll try to take some pics along the way if I have room next to all my cold weather gear I'm packing..not looking forward to Kansas..I hear they don't clear their roads perhaps quite as diligently as Colorado..and that part of the drive, as I recall, goes on forever to Salinas. Wish me luck..I hope to make it home late Sunday or by Monday. Fellow middie bretheren..don't shoot me!Here's some pics of the car:
Ryan

weather isn't looking very good at all. any eastern colorado/western kansas locals know of any good towns to stop in for gas, motels and eats? this looks like a crawl back to arkansas..

Ryan, I'm actually relieved that you did not bite on that 993 in DFW...I think you'll be happier with this cab. Be careful man, I don't think I'd be trying the drive with the ice I'm seeing in the forecast. Can't wait to get your impressions of the new one...

Good thing it's a C4...you're going to need it! About this time last year, I had purchased a P-car out of Dallas. After seeing what shipping would be by enclosed trailer to the northern Chicago suburbs, I decided to fly down and drive back. Had to re-schedule a couple of times due to freezing rain and such in Texas/Oklahoma/Missouri. Good luck and be careful.

thanks! yeah, they got kinda squirrely on that cab..said it sold, but i think it's still there. i have a feeling it was a flood car and they knew i'd figure it out, so they just quit talking to me. good thing.

jmatta, yeah..same here. cost of shipping enclosed floated around a grand..one-way ticket a couple hundred, plus you get the..fun drive?! man, i'm starting to get 'cold feet', no pun intended. this could be a crawl back and may have to dip into vacation time spent in dumpy motels in the middle of nowhere - if i'm lucky! thanks!

and yeah, craig..i decided i just couldn't afford a sorted 993, so i started looking at the 964's and the more i looked and read, the more comfy i got with them. i think i'm going to enjoy this one if i don't total it in ice and snow coming home..

Ryan,

I made the drive in September .
From Denver, to Sante Fe NM then on back to Memphis.
From Sante Fe I went to Amarillo, OK City, thru Little Rock then home.
That was a great trip, but different weather.

Good looking car.

Jay

thanks, jay. actually, i was just looking at that route on mapquest. it would add about 350 more miles, but the weather doesn't look a lot better that way..more ice i think than snow! damn.

do they sell 'plastic' tire chains that wouldn't damage nice wheels??

I took that route be cause I wanted enchiladas in Taos and Santa Fe.
Weather is not being your friend for this trip. My boss' boss drove back from Colorado Springs just after the new year, arcoss NM and the Texas panhandle. His storry was pretty scary, high snow drifts, nearly getting stuck and just ahead of the highway closings. He was in a jeep, little higher ground clearence.

Oh, studded tires! Thats the ticket.

Hey don't thank me, it was fun. I got to drive a very nice car and get a little "hands-on free education" about 964s and stuff.

True, it doesn't look like too exciting of a drive, Ryan. But like someone else said, you'l get to see how well the AWD works!

Hey, Jeremy! (the man) I get in tonight at 10 pm, if flights are on schedule. I'll give you a call if you want to meet up this evening or tomorrow with Harald and I. How are the roads looking right now? Okay if you make it to the interstates you think?

Wish you the best of luck. With the 4 wheel drive you should be ok. And the experience will be worth it. I remember when I bought an E34 M5 (1991) from Dallas, flew down and drove it up here. The sound of the big 6 with itb's and eisenmann race exhaust as I flew out of toll booths and cruising across the country made for a very memorable journey that will probably stick in my mind forever..

Good luck Ryan. It isn't snowing in Broomfield right now, but it is up North I guess. Not sure if it is moving south or not. I don't think you should have any problems with your flight.

Hopefully you don't run into any problems. Make sure the windshield washers work, and take some extra fluid with you.

Bill

Uhhhh. Well It dusted about 1/2 inch here last night. I don't think Colorado or Karnsas are your problem anymore. Oklahoma, well that's another story.

I think if you drive carefully, you'll be fine. But tell Harald don't bother washing the car. LOL

BTW, I'm very interested in the outcome of this story, as I have a similar journey: KC to Denver next Tuesday or Wednesday!

Ryan, good luck with your drive. If you have to, think outside the box and find some long way home that'll keep you clear of the bad stuff. You know, just like a diversion around a line with level 5's in it.

Oh, and beautiful new 964 Cab. I love it!

Ryan, best of luck buddy. If you decide to take a southern route to avoid the ice (through DFW), you can stay here a night or two in our cabana inShreveport/Bossier City (I-20)...then decide if the run from Texarkana to LTR is clear on I-30, or continue an hour east on I-20 to RSN and go 167 north. be safe!

Bad weather here in Missouri right now. Freezing rain and sleet through Sunday. Drive safe and be patient!
