16:9 is a compromise between 'true' widescreen movie format and the old 4:3 TV format.
If you want a real shocker, watch Lawrence of Arabia. That movie was shot wiiide. I question 2.35 as a common ratio, though, Terry. LoA is 2.2 and is about the widest movie I've ever seen. |

My favorite movie IS there! (Dr. Strangelove...)
I had no idea that aspect ratio was so common. |
Apparently I'm not done yet cause I run across another question. My FO cables and my HDMI cables came in the mail today so I'm hooking them up now. I hooked up the FO cable from the TV to the A/V receiver and I have to have the volume about 3/4 of the way up to hear it. The light coming from the end of the cable is VERY dull. Now when I take that same cable and hook it up from my PS2 to the receiver the light is BRIGHT and the sound is AMAZING. What am I doing wrong when I hook it up from the TV to the receiver? Is there a TV setting that I need to find? If I use the RCA Jacks for audio out it sounds better but still not near as nice as the PS2. Any ideas?

Minor threadjack...
A lot of the house we are looking at have media rooms. Is it really worth it to pay the extra $$$ for the front projection screen and such? What is the best option for media room use? Anyone have any links to sites about this stuff? I would like a nice media room but I don't want to pay $20k for the electronics... |
I almost did the front projection TV set up too. But I didn't have a dedicated 'dark' room for it. Any kind of natural light can bleed out your picture (this is key point). So it wouldn't have worked for me. Also, the bulbs don't last as many hours as a LCD or Plasma. So plan on bulbs when you purchase. All I did was scratch the surface by looking at Circuit City, Best Buy, and a Local place that specializes in Home Theater. With what I was thinking of doing it was somewhere around $7000. Decided to do the Sony LCD. That's about the limit to what I found out, but I'm sure there are some good sites out there for more info.

$20K can be on the cheap end. ;) |

I bought a 1080i Denon DVD player hooked up via HDMI to the 46" Mitusbishi. Worlds better than the cheapo progressive scan DVD player I started with. The picture quality is not quite HD but very impressive. Thanks for the help Eric. |
I have seen some VERY nice projectors in the $1000-$2000 range... projector technology is like PC technology of yester-year... prices are dropping by HALF every year. We replaced a ten year old $70,000 JVC with a $9000 projector... and that has been replaced by one around half that price.
If you know your specs you can get a high quality home projector for around $1000 off the Internet. I recommend SHARP, they are easy to work on and parts are easy to find. |
All hooked up and a done deal! I picked up one of those Upscaling DVD players also. Everything is hooked up VIA component, HDMI, Fiber Optic, and digital Coax. Looks and sounds amazing.
Oh, I also picked up this which if you haven't tried it you should go take a listen. No wires to run and no speakers to mount. YSP1100: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/ysp1/idx_ysp1100.htm Thanks for all the help guys! |
I did something similar.
