Borderline Personality Disorder
I was wondering if anyone here has any personal experience with someone who has BPD.

Ten years ago I worked briefly with child and youth psychiatry. Came across a few borderline teenagers, mostly girls. That is really a wicked disturbance. Wore me out. No close personal experience though.

Yes. Mother in law, not fun but we just address everything head-on.
She isn't allowed on our property, we keep visits to public places where she isn't as likely to make a scene, and if she does we can split easily. We also use the buddy system so no one is alone around her, so she is less likely to distort conversations and make accusations. Be very, very careful.

Yes. It is life changing for all involved. The critical commitment comes from the person suffereing from BPD. It is common for them to refuse the fact that they need medication.

Besides being unable to form lasting bonds to other people, the biggest problem is their literary picture of everything and everybody as either perfectly white or terribly black - and that the color can change from one moment to the other. In the morning you are their hero - they want to marry you. In the afternoon they are plotting to hurt you.

Dated a girl once, sweet girl, sometimes, other times a living nightmare.
She was like a box of chocolates, you never knew what you were gonna get. Run if you can. If it's family then get some profrssional help with it if you can.

a disorder characterized primarily by emotional dysregulation, extreme "black and white" thinking, or "splitting" (believing that something is one of only two possible things, and ignoring any possible "in-betweens"), and turbulent relationships. That does sound familiar! |

Yep - teenage foster daughter. Great kid when things were OK. Indescribable when things weren't.
I could see it coming on in her eyes. It was not at all pleasant to deal with. Good luck with it.

The "I hate you don't leave me" disorder.
One disorder MANY therapists won't take and most hate to get as a client! |
