Thanks guys. Of course I tell him about the salt thing and he says "oohh I just had a burger"

I'll try and convince him of the severity of the risk.

He is living much healthier so far though. He even looks 200% better even though his heart is still screwed up.

Thanks again guys, I'll update when they know more.

I would have expected that they had educated him about it before his departure from the hosp. He prob got a bunch of info/papers. Make him look through the paperwork from the hospital. Anything remotely processed prob has too much salt (hot dogs, anything in a can, sauces, chips, pickles etc). Likewise any restaurant, not just fast food hamburgers, can contain too much salt. The chefs think we don't salt our food enough. Best option is to start fresh/frozen and do the rest himself.

Heart failure is the #1 diagnosis code for US hospital admits. So people come back a lot.

Thanks Peter, I gave him your info.

He literally lived off of fast food and whey protein so this is not going to be an easy thing for him. He only recently got a refrigerator after living without one for a couple years. I'm not kidding:D

Len, sometimes family need to take the bull by the horns so to speak. What I mean is this...take two weeks off to care for your brother and do everything together. Teach him to read about the food he's putting into his body. Avoid as completely as possible any food with preservatives and pesticides. The first couple of trips to the supper market will be lengthy but worth it. Peter hit the nail on the head. Buy frozen and/or fresh everything. Most fish is ok and don't get carried away with celery (high in sodium) Participate in the physical part of the rehab thing. He's not going to be able to pump the iron like he used to but I'm sure he can walk and maybe ride a bicycle. I think you get what I mean. The two of you will cherish the time together.
I got to know my father this way.

Joe, and one other thing. Some old school fly boys like to over indulge on Excederine (not sure of the spelling I don't use the stuff). My father did and learned from a very young doctor that this stuff was causing his headaches. Apparently one of the active ingredients is, you guessed it, caffeine. Stopped using the stuff and the headaches went away.

Clint,

Thanks for the warning but have never taken the stuff. Do not consume caffein in any form (no, do not drink coffee) unless its the occasional iced tea or soda.
