tivo: am i missing something?
in order to watch a program and record another, I have to get an rf splitter and watch the live program with the tv and the tv remote?
If so, this crap is going back. not needed with the regular dual tuner dish dvr (or cable). |
guess I should have read the asterisk:
* Record from two basic cable channels, or one basic cable and one digital cable channel, at once. Does not support recording from two digital cable or satellite channels at once. Supports recording from cable and satellite sources only; does not support recording from over-the-air antenna. |
You can watch a live program and record another if you have a dual tuner Tivo.
|
It is a dual tuner tivo. I'm starting to think that all the tivo lovers have never used a real dual tuner from digial cable or satellite:
80-hr TiVo® Series2™ DT DVR One-time fee for this box: $69.99 Product highlights * New! Record 2 shows at once* * Record from two basic cable channels, or one basic cable and one digital cable channel, at once. Does not support recording from two digital cable or satellite channels at once. Supports recording from cable and satellite sources only; does not support recording from over-the-air antenna. |
Our TiVO has a connection to the satellite dish and another satellite dish connection goes to the HDTV tuner. We watch one show while we record another. We also have a SlingBox, so my former boss, who's living in Sweden can record his favorite shows on our TiVO and watch them whenever he wants on his PC in Sweden. He records shows while we watch TV and it works well, but we're only recording from one source at a time...

You can also do a splitter and put one tuner on the cable or sat and the other on a plain antenna or cable input without a tuner box and record two at once.
I could not live without my Tivo and slingbox but then thats me... |
I have TiVo series 1, 2 and now 3 w/HD. So I guess I like it :). Series 3 records 2 shows at once (using 2 cablecards), -and_ lets you watch a third from an antenna source. Since that is way more TV than I would ever need, being able to record 2 shows at once seems great to me.
|
I ran two connections from the DirecTV spliiter to the downstairs Tivo...big plus to be able to watch/record 2 shows at a time or even record two plus watch one previously-recorded.
|
Sorry to highjack but...
What is worth recording other than Battlestar Gallactica, Football, Racing?
|
It's going back.
The ease of use for recording a show and watching a different one with the dish dvr is worth the very, very, minimal advantage of UI. Now, the UI on the time warner dvr was atrocious--really horrible. The dish dvr was as good as the tivo, but doesn't have the extra networking ability whichdoesn't matter to me. |
My long time Tivo usage has always been integrated with Directv. Have HD and reg, can record any two channels and watch a third recorded show simultaneously.
All of my Tivo stuff is at least 3 years old now. Not sure what is out there currently. |
