The Progressive Era, part one
When you hear someone describe themselves as a Progressive (used by socialists to avoid the "S" word) this information should give you the knowledge you need to understand where they're political philosophy really lies. Further, Progressives were and still are found in both of the largest political parties in America. Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive who wanted America thrust upon the world stage, to take "her" rightful place among world governments. He saw the Spanish-American War as a stepping stone to that end. Two other progressive changes in the US government were the 16th Amendment, never legitimately ratified but declared to be so; and the 17th Amendment to take power away from the states to make America safer for the socialist Progressives.

The best president in the 20th century, Calvin Coolidge, presided over the largest increase in personal wealth in the history of America prior to World War Two. Yes, you are correct in my opinion on the protectionist tariffs on imports, but all economic systems have up and down cycles. The import tariffs were passed at the same time a down cycle was starting which exacerbated it. Then Roosevelt was elected in 1932 and made what would have been a short economic down turn into a catastrophic economic disaster that lasted nearly 10 years. Roosevelt hurt more people, as a result of his fascist programs, than anyone before or since that time. We're still living with his crap programs and government attitudes today. |

The policies of the Progressives were regressive in their effect. The redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor reduced opportunities for the poor in the private sector and made the poor slaves of the government. The trend continues today, evidence the regressive policy of increasing the minimum wage...but that's part of another thread.
