Why Would Some Try & Steal My Plate Sticker?

Gang - Just venting I guess. I recently re-newed my plate stickers \ tags and on the weekend when I was washing my car, I noticed that someone had tried peeling it off and ripped a decent section off the new sticker.

I was thinking which idiot would do that? I am sure if a cop was to run a plate they can tell if they have a current tag or expired? Seems stupid and pointless?

What are you guys thoughts?

Happens all the time around here. With the sticker the cop wouldn't know the plate was expired unless he stopped the car for a reason other than no current sticker.

it prevents a 'quick' visual notice that a plate isn't legit. even w/o running the plate, if a cop/meter maid sees '05 instead of '07 etc right away it alerts them whearas you could get away w/o registering/insuring a car (even just to park it on the street) if the sticker is 'current'

one way to prevent that is to slash the sticker w/ an exacto after it's applied to the plate

I put a clear cover over my license place with stickers. More trouble than most thugs want to deal with when there is usually another car with an unprotected sticker 15 feet away...

I have know them to cut out the metal of the plate with some sheers and then remove the sticker later. Happened to a friend. I also had my back plate stolen in Vail over July4 one year.

Thieves suck :(

after you put the stickers on your plate you slash them with a box knife or a razor blade.

EDITED since Dave already brought this up...DUH.

My contribution:

move to a better area..

problem solved.

Is a common thing here in Mexifornia. Is easier than trying to come up with ID acceptable to DMV. Now that insurance is actually checked, will make problem worse, I suspect.

Of course, one of the 'acceptable' forms of insurance on a California registered vehicle is a Mexican insurance policy where the address matches the registration.

I am getting tired of being the only legal person in Los Angeles.

Also, don't let the stickers build up on the plate. Remove the old one before putting the new one on.

If you have 10 years of stickers piled up, it's really easy to peel the stack right off. I think they look for those.

If it's just one sticker applied directly to a very clean plate, it is almost impossible to remove it in anywhere near one piece.

When I used to store my car trailer in a yard I had my tag stolen off of it.

I just started taking the tag off the trailer after I parked it after that. I locked the tag the tool box.

When I discovered that the plat was stolen it was when I was picking up the trialer to take mt RX7 to an AX.

I towed it anyway sans plate and yes, I got pulled over, the cop was as cool as could be though and reported my tag stolen and let me go without any warning or anything. I got a replacement plate that next week for $10.

To answer your question for the 10th time, its for a-holes that do not want to legally register and insure their cars. They use the sticker on their own expired plate so they "look" like they are up to date and insured.

I have never put the plate on my trailer. I have a current tag, but keep the plate behind the seat of my truck to prevent theft.

I've never been pulled over. If I ever do, I've got the current plate and registration with me.

Wow, must be nice! Indiana makes us buy NEW plates everyother year or so. The most stickers we can ever build up is 2 or three!!
