Anyone Think The Oldie Goldie Benz 560SEC Coupes Still Cool?

I promise I am not a washed up Rapper, or playing in the minor leagues.

I find these cars have aged beautifully and growing as a kid, always loved the look of these cars.

I am thinking down the road of picking one up. Last of the reliable old school tank like Benzes. They look great lowered too with the right aftermarket wheels.

Not the zippiest things out there but a true Gentleman's cruiser.

Any of you guys likey?

black one looks cool. Was it ever offered with a manual in the US?

Yeah verily...Beautiful...wouldn't change the wheels, keep it stock...true elegance is simplicity and that car exudes class just the way it sits.

Yes they are way COOL...the V8s in them are bullet proof...but be prepared for expensive maintence..Front brakes need to be done every 15000 miles and that about a Grand the last time I heard.

I was told years ago that that was the preferred personal car of many Grand Prix drivers. Is that true?

No these cars were never offered in a manual...sadly!

Yes many F1 drivers used these cars as their personal transportation and in fact Bruno Sacco, who just retired as the Merdeces Design Division head has one as his own personal car up to this day, regardless of all the AMG and V12 Twin Turbo stuff he had at his finger tips.

Here is another sweetie!

I like those as well. My 2nd favorite Benz, after the Porsche-tuned E500/500E.

Yes, cool car indeed. These cars make me realize how much their product has fallen in more ways then one. Use to make good looking, dependable cars.

I like the lines...cleaner than the rolling jelly beans of today.

The reason that they would have been the personal car of race drivers, (and many other rich people), is that they were among the most expensive and top-of-the-line MBs of their day. They were arguably the best and safest car sold in the mid-'80s, but technology has marched on and they are absolute pigs compared to what is offered today from MB. (And others).

High maintenence costs, horrible fuel mileage on premium and all of the good miles have been used up by someone else. Sort of like marrying an over-the-hill hottie that some richer guy got the best years out of already, but the expensive maintenence is still there.

The consolation is that they are cheap unless they are in concours condition, but you could drive a lot of newer luxury cars for the same yearly $$ once everything is factored in, IMO.

Here's a coupe I think has more cool factor. I thought about buying this, but then came to my senses...no place to keep it.

The w126 chassis is awesome. Here is a V12 SEC:

My friend you are completely mistaken.

That is a 5.0L V8 32valve engine conversion in a sweet SEC. This 32V 5.0L is the M119 engine and originally came on the post '91 500SL Convertibles.

I like '50 Fords, but c'mon, comparing them to an 80's Benz super coupe? Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, huh?

This is what it looked like when I saw it last. Looks like a V12 to me. And yes I know Mercedes did not make a w126 V12 factory version.

I almost bought a black one at an insurance auction a few years back, thinking I'd replace the damaged front sheet metal, and give it to my wife.

Then I overheard a couple of more knowledgable guys discussing how this was the only M-B that didn't share any body structure with other M-Bs, and that parts are all but impossible to find outside of paying astronomic prices from the factory. After they walked away convinced it was good only for parts, I also walked away.

Good looking cars.
