That shows your true character; you did not revert to his level and stop being polite. It is always a drag when people are rude, especially when you have shown them some kindness or courtesy. But the bottom line is that the way that you conduct yourself says everything about you, not the other people. "This is how I was raised, sorry to see about you...."

And of course we encounter plenty of thoughtful people on the road of life who will appreciate your manners. AND they are contagious, most of the time. Some people are hopeless, and I pity the reduced value life they lead.

Oh, and I don't hold doors for able-bodied men unless they are very close.

Or struggling with ladders and luggage carts ;)

Thanks for your compliment. I try not to let 'em get me down.

many years ago i held the door for a woman as i was walking into a department store in new york city and was subjected to a ranting tirade about how women are perfectly able to open their own doors blah, blah, blah.., and the history of the womens movement, you get the idea. jeez, you try to excercise good manners and get your head bitten off for your trouble. anyway it was such a scene that i actually thought about tripping her.
the moral of this, i guess, is that while good manners may open doors for you, when you open them for other people you not only may not get thanked, you might even get b*tched out.

She was a head-case. Keep those people at arms length.

I always felt 'holding the door' was a typical 'form before function' kind of French behavior. Of course, it does show that you have an altruistic thing going toward your fellow man. But honestly, when I am behind I often hope the person before me will NOT hold the door - particularly if there is a few meters between us. Makes me feel I have to start running to catch the door, so he won´t have to lose too much time on account of me. Similarly, if I am first and I show the person behind me I will stop and hold the door - I feel guilty because he feels guilty - and he starts to run..

All in all - holding the door - generally consumes more energy than not holding the damn door. ;)

Is it just me or do you get the same feeling when on a busy highway you make room for a truck with it's blinker on and give him the "you're all clear" signal and get nothing in return?

Sorry to highjack but...

Ever open a door to walk in to a place and someone walks out through that door? WTF!!

vash 02-09-2007 05:55 AM

mexican guy? i would have waited until he got to the door, and then let him hold it open for me.

I AM JUST KIDDING! i typically only hold the door for people carrying loads, or any and all hot chicks. just being all good looking is one heck of a load.

True, but Mexicans are used to having the door held open for them......down at the border.

That's my beef with the door holding thing. You're being courteous, and half the time you don't even get a kissmyass for your good deed.
Yeah that really irritates the heck outta me too. I always want to say something sarcastic back, like 'you're welcome' but I usually just keep my mouth shut....

I really ought to say something next time, if only to see their reaction...

Yeah that p!sses me off too...I let a BMW in front of me on the way to school this morning, and thankfully they were nice enough to wave thanks...it's the little things that can make the big difference, in my opinion...:)

Next time some one says Thanks a lot A-hole - Say "your welcome *****head. Lets them know where you think their head is at.

Larry David is HILARIOUS! I've got Curb Your Enthusiasm's theme as my ringtone on my cell...I'm surprised there's not an episode where he does just that...question the proper distance to hold the door? There should be!
