obsessive behavior? or shopping addiction.

my dad passed away when i was young. thankfully, my mom re-married. my stepdad is a great guy. but the dude has some quirks. i am not much of a psych guy, but the man (used to) buy alot of things. if my mom, wasnt as badass as she is, i think the man would have shopped his butt into poverty. she put the skids on his "collecting". my brother and i will get his collection of shotguns. he has every make and model handwritten in a ledger. last count, he as an excess of 100 shotguns. you cannot name a shotgun, without him saying, "oh, i have 2 of those". he basically uses 3 shotguns now, and my mom wants the 3 gun vaults gone. some other things he has collected are rolex watches, and of all things...jackets. i bet he has thousands.

what gives? (shoulda, coulda, woulda) if he had put the $$ in an IRA instead. damn. makes my hand-washing thing seem downright normal. what kills me are the pics of his old cars. MGs, two early 911s's, the 75 targa that he gave me, that started my own obsession, bmw3.0CSi, some 914 that he traded to get the targa, and a triumph Bonneville, and a friggen norton 750 commando, that i wish he kept. ok, i wish he kept one earlyS and the commando.

I thought I was a little compulsive when it comes to buying things, but this really puts things in perspective. I have 7 coats (from a full-length dress coat to a Carhardt). I have 4 guns, 2 computers (one inherited), 3 vehicles, 8 pairs of shoes (4 of them are worn-out running shoes that are still good for yard work), and LOTS of tools.

I guess I went four years in college without really ever buying anything, so I feel guilty that I spend money on myself almost every week now. That, and I can't seem to pay off my credit card, though I never exceed 5% of my yearly salary in balance. I keep thinking if I stopped buying stuff for 2-3 months, I'd be able to pay it off.

The Rolex's the the Shotguns might actually turn out to be real money makers if he collected quality and not quanity.

Smae goes for a few of the jackets, maybe he has the same smoking jacket as Heff in there. (yes, another Larry David reference)
