It's RICK time.....(impulse buy)

Stopped into a small music shop in Seneca SC today, just to have a look around at lunch time.

When I saw it hanging there (2000 model 360 6 string), something snapped...and I brought her home. Absolutely magical plugged into my little 30 watt Marshall practice amp. I've always wanted a Ric...now I have one. :D

Ok now just as long as you know it is Ric for short not Rick. Very cool, been thinking about one of those for about 40 years now.

bigchillcar 02-09-2007 03:53 PM

les paul..thinking about rickenbacker?? who'd a thunk it? :)

Life is short. It was time to buy it. Highly approve.

Congratulations! I have always wanted a Ric 4003 stereo bass and someday, I'll get one. I met the owner of Rickenbacker a few years ago at a NAMM show in Anaheim. Very nice man and the company is still family run and all of their products are made in the US (Santa Ana, I believe). Enjoy that beautifil guitar!

rouxroux 02-10-2007 06:11 AM

Art, I've got a VERY old 4001 stereo (low 3's s/n), previous owner was a young fellow named Tim Bogert. Plays "like butter". Don't take it out gigging, but every now and then I have to use it on a Chris Squire cover. I've always loved Rics. ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171120255.jpg

rouxroux,
Beautifil "Nigel Tufnel" collection there! Is that "Bogert" as in "Beck, Bogert and Appice"? I met Chris Squire a few years ago at the NAMM and he was very funny. He saw me looking at the 4003 Geddy Lee model and said Geddy is a "wanker" and I should buy the Chris Squire model instead...

rouxroux 02-10-2007 06:40 AM

Yes, Art, that would be him. He's going to be touring with a Vanilla Fudge reunion soon, got to go hear that one. Carmine used to hang around this area alot right before his stint with Rod Stewart. He was playing in a power trio with Danny Johnson at the time. Still have my old sheet music copy of "Into it", a solo he used to use at workshops when he was with Ludwig.

Thanks for the comments on the basses. I don't want to hijack the Ric thread, but sometime I'll send you some pics of some of my "Frankenbasses" including a nice old J with the Novatone "switchboard" system. Have all 4 fingerboards and use that thing as one of my primary basses.

Someone else needs to post some Rics!

The really pleasant surprise was hearing my wife say that exact same thing! Now I have a guitar...and a sports car with waaaaay more capability than I have! Just part of the fun.

A quick question. The stand I'm using for it is unlike others I have. It was recommended by the shop where the guitar was consigned. But, all the weight rests on the lower part of the headstock. Any concern? I do like the idea that it "locks" in place and can't easily be knocked off the stand.

I tweaked the action a bit (I like it low). What a sweet instrument. Thanks for all the comments.

I never warmed to Rics, guitars or basses.

As for basses, I'm afraid I've had the same 2 Zons for the past 7 years and may not ever chage...unless I decide to finally add a Rob Allen fretless 5 w/34" scale for the thud sound...

Mike, that hanging type of stand is great! I use a few of those on stage (mine are made by "Ultimate"). The ones I used in my pic are just some "cheap-o junkers" I had accumulated over the years. I'm using a "Rockstand" by Warwick case-type holder now. It looks like a 3/4 size guitar case, opens up and holds 7 instruments. I'll try to take a picrure later today.

Thanks Roux. Will stick with it.

Pickin' and grinnin' (like the village idiot). It's good to get a charge out of a new toy at age 48.

cool guitar. congrats. I've never owned one, but Im a big fan of semi-hollow and hollow body electrics these days. Is there a center block in there or is it completely hollow?

rouxroux 02-10-2007 10:22 AM

Mike, here's the Warwick rockstand case. Small footprint, you can get them in different sizes...Pretty handy. I moved the 4001 to the front for a better view ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171135333.jpg

craig: i spy two other instruments in your collection i made all-state on in high school - a french horn and trumpets.

hijack! i had a silver french horn (forgot the manufacturer) and still have a silver benge jazz horn purchased in '81 with some odd mouthpieces including a maynard ferguson model for those 'ol lip trills.. ;)

rouxroux 02-10-2007 11:09 AM

Eagle-eye Ryan! Yes, we could be here all day if I start talking about brass instruments. The horn is an Alexander #103 Bb/F, and the two trumpets in that pic are (rear) a "newer" Yamaha Xeno and (front) my wife's OLD Bach Strad (she bought it from the principal player in the N.O. symphony 35 years ago-he was her private teacher) very warm trumpet. I'm more of an old Schilke player myself. Bachs are a little too warm for lead playing.

bigchillcar 02-10-2007 11:25 AM

+1 craig...felt same about bach strad's..too warm. now that benge with thin bell? it shrills! :)
