Question about my air compressor....
 

I bought this beast a few months ago and it works great. But when the pump is running, quite a bit of air is hissing out the little hole in the plastic elbox shown in the pictures. The elbow is connected to a plastic tube running back to the tank.

The tank charges up fine, but maybe that's just because it's got a big compressor. Anyone know what the function of the little elbow is, and whether it's supposed to be blowing air?

You should not have air leaking out of anywhere. Have you contacted the maker or seller and asked about warrenty repair?

relief valve?

Could be a relief valve but even so, it should not be leaking. I have a ball valve on my compressor between it and the garage system and it holds pressure to the pound for months on end, and no leakage either when running or sitting.

For a new system it should be fixed while still under warranty.

It only hisses out air while the motor is running. When the motor stops the tank is sealed tight and will hold a charge for days.

I believe it may be the pressure relief valve to decompress the cylinder when it stops, so that when the compressor starts up, the cylinder is not under pressure. What it should do is not leak while running and you should have a pressure relief hiss for a second or two when it stops to depressurize the cylinder. Sounds like its defective as it should be closed when running and only open for a second or two on shut off. Try cleaning it or hitting it lightly with a small hammer to see if it seats.
