Driving a USA car in Canada

Does anybody know how long I can drive a USA car in Canada (Calgary).

Here’s the Deal...

My brother lives in LA (US Citizen) and has a 2005 911. He is thinking of driving it up to Calgary for the summer, then he’s off to Italy for five months.

He is willing to let me drive the car for the rest of the year. He has already put me on as a second driver on his insurance.

Since I am Canadian Citizen & I was wondering how long I can drive the Car before the “Cops” say something.

thanks

YOU WILL GET NAILED BY THE CALGARY CITY POLICE if you drive it around town for more than 2 weeks at a time.

The only solution is to alternate drivers every two weeks. As a personal favour, I will take it off your hands for the first two weeks of each month. No charge - that's just the kinda guy I am.

Seriously. Just shut-up and drive. You have nothing to worry about, so long as it has US plates. If you get pulled over by the RCMP or city police just don't tell them that your brother has left the country. No need to let things get more complicated than they need to be.

There are no problems with a US car unless you want to register it locally, then you need to jump through various hoops.

Creaturecat, I don't think he's looking to "import" the car. It will be temporarily in Alberta (albeit a long stay).

Bello, just have your brother pose the question with his insurance company. I think they would be the most skittish on the issue but as far as Alberta law goes; I wouldn't know.
