AAA Flatbed Question
 

I need to get a car from "Point A" to "Point B." I have AAA-plus. The catch is that I will not be with the car at Point A when it needs to be picked up.

Is there any way to have AAA pick-up a car and flatbed it to another location if I'm not present when the car is picked-up?

Just moved a roller and you need to be there.
And do not let them put it on backwards either.

I take this to mean no one will be there. I personally would be a little leery of that. I have had mine done with AAA with no problem but I was present and I am glad I was.

Also, do NOT tell them that it is going for anything other than repairs due to it breaking down.

Once I was in the middle of a V-8 conversion in a Toyota Landcruiser and wanted to flat bed it to my friend's house (mechanic) for final tuning etc. Nope, can't do that. Cost me $75.

They also have all kinds of rules that you might not know:

no oversize tires on your truck/SUV, at all. Even the new Titans with 33s are hit or miss depending on the driver.
nothing allowed in your truck (such as a dirt bike) no matter how well attached

There was something else too and I asked the driver just how mad people must get when they learn this the hard way. He agreed 100% and doesn't like it, but they have to play by AAAs rules.....

OTOH, I broke down on the way back from a kart race in Vegas. I was towing an enclosed race car trailer (14'). The tow truck loaded my PU on the FB and hooked the trailer up on the hitch. Off we went back to Vegas even though Baker was closer. $300, but it was USAA and they paid after b!tching a whole bunch.

Carry AAA and anything else that is offered for cheap. In my case, USAA adds only a few bucks for roadside.

If you want it hauled on a flat bed instead on on the hook, tell them it is a carrera 4 (awd).

AAA in SoCal, will only send flatbed trucks when picking up expensive cars.

The times that I have called AAA they have always sent a flatbed on request. They have told me that I might have to wait longer but they never told me no.

Before you tow get your head under the rear of the car and learn where the tow hook holes are. They are really to find on the side of the road. :D

Never use the hooks for hold down, strap the wheels.

AAA has always sent a flatbed on request for me and my 356... They were once prepared to send a truck down from Savannah Ga. (I'm 90 miles S. of the Fl/Ga border) to pick me up.

...and not even all that reliably then. My girlfriend had a flat in her SL-55, damaged the side wall and it carries no spare. Called AAA and they wanted to argue with me when I told them it had no spare, that the dealership was "only" about 2-3 miles away and I said, "No, it cannot be driven there on a flat...":rolleyes: and an even bigger argument when I told them it was too low to be towed conventionally, had to be a flat bed. The person had no idea what the car was and couldn't have cared less.

I did this when I sold my 914 last year. I asked around the mechanic community for a few towing references and found a local body shop that also does towing for AAA. I brough them them the car, they loaded it, and droped it off at the new owners place (about 80 miles away). They did the paperwork and AAA paid for the whole ride. I did tip the place 40 or 50 bucks , but it was well worth it.

Doing it this way you don't have to contact AAA directly, but since once of their vendors is doing the job you're all set. The towing company will know if they can do it for you or now, so you may just need to ask around.

No. My fuel pump went out. Called AAA and the sling-guy came; he looked at the car and said it was too low. He called AAA and a flatbed came.
