Thumbs up Returned home from family ski trip to a Blizzard!

Took the family on our annual Holiday Valley New York ski trip Sunday thru Tuesday and the last hour or so we were treated to a drive thru what the local news was calling blizzard conditions. Finally we have some real snow!

Got to skip work yesterday and plow out and play with the kids on the snowmobile. We have 5' drifts in our yard. It has been a long time since we have had "real" snow around here. Going snowmobiling tonight after work and may put the skiis on the plane for a bit of fun this weekend!

It doesn't get any better!

The last 20 miles of the drive home, not too bad yet, but it's coming!

Checking out our road late Tuesday afternoon in the Tacoma...our road is now nearly impassable

I hope the snow stays awhile, but with my luck, it will all melt next week

Men do not quit playing because they get old.... They get old because they quit playing.

A serious note:

When I was younger, I loved to see the snow since I was an avid cross country skiier. For years, I dreaded March and looked for shady areas in the skiing locales so I could get in that "one last run". Despite two broken collar bones over the years, I loved the crisp cold and the feeling of freedom.

Unfortunately, I got older. Winter, especially in the "snowbelt" became a chore of keeping the driveway clean (especially when it would thaw during the day, re-freeze at night), and icy roads. I remember the skiing with fondness and do not regret one minute of the time I spent outside. But, there comes a time when one just has to pack it in.

The point? Enjoy it while you can. It is heaven. Savor every opportunity to get out and feel the crispness and purity of Winter. I, for one, now view the snow from a safe distance on the top of the mountains about 18 miles away.

Man, how old are you?

At 40, I still love it, but I do notice that my thighs burn fiercely after 50 yards of fairly tame moguls. I think I need to start thinking about doing a bit of physical training as I age so that I can continue enjoying the stuff I like to do.

My dad is in his 60's and he still loves driving and playing in the snow as much as he did when I was a kid, so I don't think I will tire of it soon.

TIm:

Take your present age, add a quarter of a century and beyond that I won't tell!!

I still feel like a kid, but the joints tell me differently if I overdo it.

Tim;

Physical training is the key to doing this well for a long time. Some gym pain beats missing a day of skiing or being too sore the 2nd or 3rd day to really enjoy it. You don't need to kill yourself but some basic stuff and some leg work makes a big difference.
If you like to rip I think it is imperative. Maybe pure recreational skiers can get by doing nothing but ripping and bumping require some investment.

No doubt, I need to do a bit of training. A few years ago, I could still ski the bumps maybe 30% 50% of the time and would be sore as hell a couple days after. Now, my legs won't let me ski bumps long enough to make all my other muscles get sore. Just simply making turns on a black is boring to me, so if I want to really enjoy my future ski trips, I will have to start working out a bit. No doubt, I need to for more reasons than just skiing. I don't want to wake up five years from now and find out I am grossly overweight and cannot do anything fun anymore.
