the real great songwriters

was looking at the AFI's top 100 movies and checked out the top 100 movie songs. The list is impressive (with come clunkers....Flashdance?!?), but got me thinking about the *really* great songwriters over the past 75 years or so. Lennon and McCartney were mentioned in another thread, but if you step back a bit you have (in no particular order)

Stephen Sondheim (with Leonard Bernstein for West Side Story)
George and Ira Gershwin
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
Henry Mancini
Irving Berlin
Frederick Loewe and Alan Lerner

Sondheim especially knocks me out...and West Side Story has amazing music throughout.

John Williams comes to mind, although I'd consider him more of a "composer" than "songwriter".

Songwriters?

Johnny Mercer should be somewhere near the top of that list...

See those are performers as well. I think Nostatic's list is just people whoe *write*.

BTW, I'm f***ing ecstatic. I finally started getting around to recording my old bootleg and demo tapes into the PC. Some of this stuff I haven't heard in like 10 years. Old Neil Young live tapes, demos of Counting Crows and Smashing Pumpkins. It's like college all over again.

I've always felt that Pete Townshend was a great songwriter.

Why does it matter? If you perform you are less of a writer?

Add another one, Carol King.

agreed. Mercer is on the AFI list with Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses (both w/Mancini)

No I mean the people you mentioned weren't on that list for that reason. But I may be wrong. I personally think that you're more relevant if you do both write and perform. But I'm DIY like that.

and I guess I've gotta add the Stones since I added the Who but now that makes it 6 instead of 5...oh well!

Forgot to add Tom Petty.
