first investors
Anyone know anything about First Investors as a place for someone right out of college to work at. What do they do? etc.

Never heard of them.
I was a finance/computer programming double major in college. I was faced with the decision of going to a financial services company as a broker/salesperson or going to an IT shop and becoming a code monkey. I chose code monkey. I'm not familiar witht this specific company, but the general model in these operations that they have a high turnover rate. They recruit dozens (if not hundreds) of college graduates every year. They are put to work in a high-pressure sales environment. Compensation is generally 100% commission and most people quit in their first year. If you can persevere for 3-5 years and build a book of business, you stand to make a LOT of money. I'm not bashing this type of operation, it just wasn't for me.

Just to clarify, this is how the big guys like A.G. Edwards and Merryl Lynch work too.

My wife worked for First Investors when we lived in New York. It's a pretty big company but she was treated well. That was 15+ years ago. Things may have changed.

Looks like a cold calling chop shop to me. Edwards and Mer are a different animal

A friend of mine who was a few years older than me got a job for what at the time was Dean Witter. He said in your first year, you pretty much exclusively did cold calling and walk-ins. If you could "prove" yourself, you might start getting business from other brokers as they retired/left the company.
