''Chimpanzees have been seen using spears to hunt bush babies, U.S. researchers said on Thursday in a study that demonstrates a whole new level of tool use and planning by our closest living relatives.

Perhaps even more intriguing, it was only the females who fashioned and used the wooden spears, Jill Pruetz and Paco Bertolani of Iowa State University reported.

The chimps choose a branch, strip it of leaves and twigs, trim it down to a stable size and then chew the ends to a point. Then they use it to stab into holes where bush babies might be sleeping.

It is not a highly successful method of hunting. They only ever saw one chimpanzee succeed in getting a bush baby once. The apes mostly eat fruit, bark and legumes.

Part of the problem is this group of chimps is shy of humans, and the females, who seem to do most of this type of hunting, are especially wary. "I am willing to bet the females do it even more than we have seen," she said.''

Evolution has already been proven. The mountain of evidence supporting it just keeps getting higher. Tiktaalik Roseae is another excellent example.

Sounds like competition. Better eradicate chimps, just to be on the safe side.

AFAIK, it's already been documented that chimps use tools in the wild. They fashion lures/traps to gather insects from holes.

"A few months after Jane Goodall began her study, she observed a chimp she called David Greybeard pick a blade of grass and carefully trim the edges. He stuck the grass into a termite mound, left it there for a moment, and pulled it out. Termites swarmed over the blade of grass. He then ate the termites clinging to the grass blade. David Greybeard had made a tool -- a "fishing rod" for termites."

So what part of L.A. was this in?

So I suppose now even the animal kingdom hates Bush. I find the hunting of bush babies disgusting.

Interesting. This also shows that primates aren't exclusively herbivores.

There have been accounts of gorillas actually practicing cannibalism.

No one ever said evolution didn't have less-than-savory side issues.

Actually the Nature channel produced a video that showed a family of Chimps hunting, killing, and dining upon, a smaller species of monkey. As I recall it was pretty brutal.
