bug bite leads to ER

Yikes! Friend who lives in Malaysia said a bug got on her the other night, she swatted it, got kind of squished into her face, then she couldn't find it. Got a red bump, then turned white, then by the time she mentioned it to me I asked if she had any red streaks. She said yes, so I told her to get to a doc. They gave her topical antibiotics and some pills and antiinflammatory meds. That was yesterday. Today it got worse, she felt like crap, and now is in the ER waiting to be admitted for iv antibiotics. Yikes!

Careful out there!

Try getting bitten by a fire ant. Toughed it out for 3 days then went to the doctor where I was given meds to control the swelling and take away the pain.

Could not move my thumb for days (was bitten on the top part of the joint and swollen to double normal size) and even 5 years later it still bothers me at times.

There are critters out there that we need to avoid, or shoot, gas or dispatch elsewhere in the animal world.

I hate spiders.

1994 Texas State Cycling Championships and I was bitten by one while standing around for the awards...here we are in 2007 and I am still dealing with the messed up bite area that will never fully recover.

Nasty bite for sure!

I've got a fire ant bite I picked up in '88 or '89 - still itches once in a while. Late last year I stepped in a mound and didn't notice, got about a dozen bites on my foot, ankle, then three more on my hand when I was swatting them all off. One of the bites on the arch of my foot, for some reason didn't itch so I didn't scratch it.

The resulting blister was nearly 2" in diameter and raised over 1/2". It just got bigger until I couldn't walk without a limp so I had to deal with it.

Brown recluses - I'm overdue. I've killed several, every time I just got lucky and happened to see it before I sat down on it or stepped on it.

Todd, what the heck bit your friend? Any ideas?

Yikes!

I have friends who keep trying to talk me into visiting south America.... looks beautiful but I have a problem with spiders that eat birds.

Never came up against a fire ants (knock on head... I mean wood) in what parts of the country are they found?

For God's sake!!

Invest in a gallon of "Home Defense" and spray the perimeter of the inside and outside of your house!! No reason for spiders in the house or ants in the yard.

Scott,

Do a search on "fire ants" and it will show you that they are taking over the Southern parts of the US. I was in Dallas when I was bitten but they are all over the place.

Second on the 'Home Defense'. I do my hangar once a month and after it rains, which in SoCal is three times a year extra.

The hangar was infested with spiders and bugs when I first got here. Now? Nada.

She wasn't sure what bit her. Probably a spider. Looks like cellulitis (bacterial infection of the skin), and one cause is an infected spider bite. Nasty stuff, and you can die if you don't get treatment in time.

There are 5 species of fireants in the US, but only one is bad. It got into Texas from a ship sometime around the 1930. When we moved to Houston in 1969, they were just getting here. They are everywhere around here.

"Over and Out" works pretty well as a preventer. Amdro (a bait) is about the only thing that works on existing mounds. I spread preventer last week in my yard and baited the greenspace behind our yard. Once they are dead, I'll hit the greenspace with the "Over and out".

I have been told by MANY pest control guys and an entomologist or two that the Brown Recluse Spider does not exist in Calif. I had a bite a few years ago and was told it was the BR but later told it was an Assassin Bug. Nasty bite for sure.

Yuck!

While in South Korea last year a co-worker got bit by a spider after walking into it's web under a tree at night. The doctors did the whole "venom ER" felt tip marker tracking the poison. They lanced the bite several times and after 2 weeks it was still a huge mess. I didn't walk under the tree's at night after that...

oh great...this is making my trip to Malaysia much more appealing...

k9handler 02-25-2007 12:12 AM

after the BR bite you would think spiders would freak me out...instead I just walk up and smash em. In Iraq the camel spiders are wicked big.
