eBay Etiquette - when do you post feedback?

I've sold several hundred items on ebay (and bought more than my fair share), so I'm not a newbie on the site (feedback is 400+ as a small time seller/buyer). As my wife keeps telling me, keep my day job.

For those of you that use eBay, when do you post feedback for a transaction? I've had several sellers tell me that they don't post feedback until I as a buyer have posted first. Kinds of bugs me.

My 'rules':
As a seller, I post feedback as soon as I receive payment.
As a buyer, I post feedback when I receive my merchandise.

And I'm loath to post negative feedback at all, preferring just to stay silent if/when a transaction doesn't work out well or a buyer doesn't complete a deal . Not worth the pain to me of negative feedback.

As a seller, I don't post feedback until the buyer has posted first.

Why? What if what you sent him was exactly as described, in perfect condition, etc. etc. etc. but he complains anyways? As a seller, I'm not going to give the transaction a positive feedback until I know the transaction has ENDED positively.

As a buyer, I post the day I receive the goods. I only have around 75 transactions, a bit more buying than selling, but every single one has been 100% positive. As a buyer, the goods have always been at least as good or better than expected. As a seller, I always understate the item, and disclose everything, so everyone's been happy.

I never leave feedback for any buyer that says they will leave whatever I leave them, I consider it dishonest.

I leave feedback after the transaction on my part is done.

buyer posts feedback as soon as having received things and they check out ok
seller posts feedback right after that

cause it's kinda effed up to post good feedback on a buyer, only to have him flip you off over something futile...

+1 . you never know who you're dealing with.

it's best not to leave feedback until the buyer has done so first.

Interesting - I've never looked at it from the perspective of possibly getting negative feedback after leaving positive feedback. Have always figured that A) I sell good stuff and stand behind it, B) IF a buyer ever posted negative feedback, I'd have the opportunity to comment on it (not that it does much and still shows as a negative).

Though I do see the points raised.

As a seller I post feedback after I get the money and ship the part. If there's an issue after the fact, I fix it. It's always worked for me.

As a buyer, I always post feedback after I get the item and confirm it's condition. I too get annoyed when sellers hold their feedback hostage until I've given them good feedback. It's pretty cheezy. But since I'm not the type of person who yanks sellers around for no reason, it really doesn't matter to me.

I do it when ever I feel like it. Sometimes weeks later. Unless I'm buying from someonw with really low numbers.. they need more x-actions to build their cred. The best feeback you get from me is "No drama." The whole thing is a scam anyway. There should be a way to filter for only the negatives.

I've had plenty of sellers never leave me feedback, even though I always PayPal immediately after I win. Some have replied that they leave feedback in batches every few weeks. Some have never replied. One seller even asked me to leave him feedback before I had received the goods. Unreal.

I buy and sell often. I generally leave feedback as soon as I receive the stuff and expect the same back. Sometimes I'll jump the gun and leave positive feedback for a buyer when they pay promptly, (my single biggest pet peeve if they don't pay quickly). One other comment. I received a negative feedback from a buyer that did so in retaliation. What at first was bothersome has now become somewhat freeing. I think more on how transactions should be categorized and less about how I can constantly protect my feedback.

In the old days you used to post feedback when the buyer paid the bill and you shipped things off, never later and never playing games.

Now you hold off until things have arrived and make sure that everything is ok.

It as well really pisses me off when someone plays games like this but the world has changed and I want to protect my 100% positive feedback. Believe me, after around 700 transactions on Ebay, its not been easy all the time.

When you say its not been easy, I would guess you are compromising? I was so bent on keeping it that I would let late payments and questionable accuracy slide just so I wouldn't get a retaliation. Finally, I had someone totally shaft me:Won an auction, disappeared for a month. Had no choice not to leave the feedback after they threatened they would do the same if I did. Too many games with the feedback in my opinion. I can't see someone with a few hundred feedbacks and 100% that hasn't compromised their judgment to some sort.

Yes and I am about to get more pissy about it. I have just about given up on Ebay and if I am not going to do more there then will start leaving feedback as it should be done, and stop worrying about my rating. It will be more accurate and if I am leaving then why not?

When someone can win an auction you are having, never pay, AND THEN, leave you negative feedback, was the last straw for me.

if someone is out to get you, they'll buy something and leave negative anyway. doesnt matter if you leave first or not.

as a buyer, i dont care if a seller leaves feedback or not. as long as I get what I paid for in good condition.

as a buyer my part of the deal is complete as soon as i pay. I expect to receive feedback right away but these sellers think it is a quid pro quo and it is not. My committment was complete as soon as i paid. give me my feedback

Am willing to buy from someone with less than 100% rating, certainly needs to be mid 90's though. Some people can't be pleased.
