Sick and tired of Symantec....any options?
 

Well I am just about sick and tired of Symantec software, almost as pissed with it as I am with Microsoft.

I have teh Norton Protection Centre 2006, all the bells and whistles and the bloody thing will not let me disable the feature where it automatically updates Windows, and keeps on changing it to auto update even when I most definitely do not want Microsoft updates being applied without me checking to see whether they apply or are desireable.

I have been a Norton customer since version 1 and I am just sick of it....is there a decent anti-virus package out there that is just anti-virus? MacAffee is apparently just as bad...anyone have any good alternatives that they have had good success with?

AVG, it's free and doesn't cause the problems that Norton and McAffee seem to ...

If that's not an option then you can get a copy of CA's Internet Security Suite for free. They always have rebates going trying to gain market share.

They also have a $1500 Virus protection policy and $5000 fraud protection policy that comes with the bundle, not valid in NY.

Their firewall sucks. I would not install that portion. Way over aggressive.

Or just buy/install the standalone AV. Go to the site and grab a free demo.

AVG works fantastic - and it's FREE! Add Zonealarm, Ad-Aware and Spybot (all these are free too), and run Firefox instead of IE. Those will prevent 95% of all problems.

I recommend AVG and Firefox and you'll be fine. I don't use any anti-spyware or software firewalls, just a Cisco router/firewall at home, but that's over-kill for most people (I'm an old cisco jockey).

Thanks guys, I'll be downloading AVG and dump Symantec... unfortunately Mr. Norton sold the company years ago and since then it's product has become a steaming pile of monkey dung.

Do a Google search for software that removes Norton 100% because the uninstall routine that comes with Norton doesn't really remove everything.

check out ESET NOD 32 also. Inexpensive and worth more money than most!!! NetPeeker is a VERY good firewall, inexpensive to free.

AVG and Firefox. Mac sucks...

I already use Firefox.....and a Mac is not an option, I am VP IT at a major company and have set the company policy for Windows/Linux....mainly as we run SAP and sorta need it....

I will try some of the suggestions listed here, although I can just imagine the eye rolling going on with my support staff when they find I am no longer running the corporate Symantec stuff...

Oh well, maybe I will just retire...

using AVG for years .no problems.
not a big fan of norton either.

I use ESET NOD 32, supposedly one of the best (if not the best) AV system made. It's also very unobtrusive and behind-the-scenes and doesn't put a strain on the system like the big ones do.

Try it out. I think you'll like it.

Norton used to be the one to have, but then it turned into a bloated pig that doesn't get updated the way it needs to.

Trend Micro works very well and is updated almost daily or at least a couple of times a week. I read some comparisons/reviews in a couple of magazines about a year and a half ago. Most seemed to think that Trend Micro was the one to have.

I have Trend Micro. I don't know dick about computers, but it's very agressive. Always updating, inspecting incoming and outgoing messages and self scanning. I guess that's the kind of thing to have for a dummy.

Similar situation here. I depend upon alot of PC-based applications that run on Windoze. I am checking into the Mac option to see if my apps will run on it.
