Nice. Never raced a VOR boat, but I used to race some big boats out of LI, Newport and Annapolis. I miss it quite a bit now. Putzing around in a J30 on Lake Ontario is not quite the same thing.

"Here comes the boom" -- great song for a sailing video! Thank God nobody got clobbered with a boom in one of those videos. It'd probably split his head like a melon.

A good friend of mine died when the spin pole snapped (35' carbon fiber pole) during a peel, just at dusk in the Round Block Island race a few years ago. Hit him in the head, he went into the water (w/o a PFD ... it wasn't "dark enough" yet to require them) and drowned.

If anybody's got a boat and needs a mast man (or a grinder...sigh), get in touch!

Holy smokes, are they ever MOVING. On our thursday races, we get excited when we hit 8-9 knots!

2 years ago ago I sailed from Newport RI to Lunenburg Nova Scotia on a 30ft boat my friend had just bought in NYC.

The day after we left was the beginning of the Marblehead race.
That night, you could see the nav lights FLYING by, and you could occasionally hear them planing off in the distance, and the YELLING.
The speed they were going by, you'd think we were anchored. Really amazing to watch...

I've done 17 knots in keel boats a few times and those were a hoot. I would give a lot to do 25+ knot blast reaching on one of the V70's. Must be unreal.

The funny thing about the video, the guys that are really getting the crap beat out of them are paying big bucks to be there (Global Challenge Race). They guys just screaming along on the V60's and V70's are getting paid big bucks and they look smooth and fast doing it. The multi guys are simply insane.

A funny story about just that.....

A few years ago Phillipe Kahn's Pegasus 77 was doing a Transpac (LA to Honolulu, about a week on the big sleds) and the head busted on day 1. No problem for the guys to lose liquid but taking a dump is another issue. The solution was to rig a harness off the lifelines on the back of the boat, complete with a roll of TP and when the urge hit, you would clip in, hop over the lifelines, drop the pants and hang your butt off the back. All the while the boat is ripping at 15-20+ knots.

I think hanging off the back would be fun but taking a dump? Not sure I could.

I felt like I was moving at warp speed when we used to have a Catalina 27 pushing 7.5 knots.

Even 6 knots on a Cat Boat in rough seas was a blast as long as you warned the crew before the Jibe

A couple of years ago we did a 120 mile distance race that started with a 50 mile reach. Wind was mid- upper teens and the boat was in a groove; perfect wind angle and strength for the big chute and pointed right at the mark. Got to the point when we were only going 11 knots seemed like we were parked and I ended up getting bored and went below and took a nap.

The first half of that race was the best sailing I'd seen. The second half caused me to quit racing for a while but that is another story.

I've done a few ocean races - only two overnighters the first one was a drifter - it was spooky ghosting along in the pitch black - new moon - your mind plays tricks on you. The 2nd was on a sweden 34 in the leftovers of a tropical storm swell. Needless to say I volunteered for the night shift as there was no way I was staying below (or sleeping for that matter)

After the alt helmsman wrenched his arm in an almost broach - I got the honors and steered for about 5 hours (the owner was dry heaving during the last 3 1/2 hours). It was absolutely frightening and exhilirating surfing down the face of 10+ footers just to stuff the nose (if you didn't come at an angle) stop, then climb up the back of another one. The gulf was almost viper green as it come rolling over the boat. Crazy.... I wouldn't do it now with kids.

My only experience with ocean sailing was that trip from Newport to Lunenburg. I was getting married the following week, otherwise I would have joined in NYC a few days earlier. They left New York City at 8 PM on July 4th, and watched fireworks for hours as they headed offshore.

I joined in a few days later in Newport, and on the first day the conditions were like those in the video. In a 30' boat you're not "cutting" through anything... you're a cork being tossed around. Not my idea of fun; if I would have gotten off I could've. Glad I stayed on though, it was a great 5 days.
