Thom,

Did you lose any $$?

Anyone?

widebody911 07-07-2008 11:13 AM

I bought some in my IRA; I'm down at the moment, but I'm not particularly concerned.

Thom's quote was from over 4 months ago. I've been out of both of these stocks since early March.

BTW, yes I lost quite a bit of money on these stocks. A very small fraction of what I've made on them tho.
The only reason they tanked is because of the oil run-up. All pure refining companies did the same thing.
I don't know of anyone here who saw oil more than doubling in a year for no logical reason. Can't predict manipulation. In a thread started by wayne I predicted oil would hit $100 by early spring but I figured it would be temporary and settle back down. It kept going up. I should dig up that old thread for *****s and giggles.

No reason to touch them unless the oil bubble bursts quickly or unless someone wants to go short but it might be too late for that.

I'm playing natural gas and mutuals for now which are just about holding their own.

About a week ago I gobbled up about $180k of VLO at 18 and small change.
I was sweating it when it fell to the high 15s, but it's rebounded back up to over 19.

It's a given that it will be a roller-coaster ride for the next 6 months or so but I'm betting it will be mostly uphill.
With a little luck I could see it average better than 50% a year for the next 5 years or so starting after this winter.

I hope you're right, I still own what I bought at $25 or so.

Sammyg2, have you looked at Dynergy DYN? I used to day trade them years ago. They seem like bargain right now.

Don't know about that one but I'll take a look.

I bought $2k worth of VLO last week at $18.56. Chump change for some but not for me. Nowhere to go but up.

It's just over $20 right now but i have no doubt it will be unstable for the short term. Up to $25, down to $17 after the first of the year, etc.
I expect the biggest upward moves to happen next spring, hopefully.

It's all a guess tho, YMMV.

sammyg2 10-31-2008 11:51 AM

Who hoo! Up 9.3% so far today to $21 and climbing.

Its nice to see a stock going up for a change instead of falling like a rock.

Valero is bouncing around $24.40, up from a low of $14 about 7 weeks ago.
Tesoro is up to around $14 from a low of $6.71.
I didn't time the bottom that well but still got back in when they were down and I'm up about 30% over the last couple of months.

I'm still way down from last year but this is helping to take the sting off of that.
I'm still looking at high volatility.
