Just drove a 2002 Turbo 911.....wow. Just wow.

Despite my best arguments, the dealer refused to take my left jewel as partial payment.

The kicker is how civilized and easy to drive the thing it. Refined, compliant suspension. Clutch is almost too light. Just a nice well thought out GT car....until you unleash THE BEAST.

Mashing the accelerator at 3,000 rpm on the freeway sets off an explosion in the back end. Turbo lag is basically undetectable. Nothing scary, just the smooth deliver of massive amounts of power.

I MUST HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

muhahahaha! MuHaHaHaHaHa! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...amingdevil.gif

My lord, these cars are a sickness. Anyone want to buy a boxster and an SC........tonight? :)

Do not let the "dark side of the force" grab ahold of you ! Resist!

Well optioned:
Sport design interior
Sport suspension
Interior Color accents (including seat backs)
Lintronic headlights
Hardtop (VERY nice during the winter months.)

Now, now. There, there.

It will probably spring a water leak or crack something electrical. Better to stick with the SC..

Who am I kidding.

David 03-13-2007 06:46 AM

I'm contemplating getting one too. A friend with a high end repair shop in town told me I would be getting a 996TT. He didn't tell me I'd want one, he told me I'd get one, that they are that nice. The only problem is I want to keep my 930 and right now I can't afford both :(

I could get a 996 now, if I could make room in the garage, but deep down, I know I'd be happier if I wait another year or two and get the 996TT.

Rick Lee 03-13-2007 09:01 AM

I can't ever bring myself to own a 996 of any kind. I lusted after a 993TT for a while. But since I've gotten my motorcycle, I get all the super speed bursts I need for about 1/10 the price of a 993TT. And I like my 993 C2 more than any other car in the world.

speeder 03-13-2007 10:30 AM

Different strokes for different folks, but I like them. I don't feel the need to compare it to ancient 911s for a "soul contest", it's a modern car. No modern car has the raw feel or same type of personality as its ancestors, whether it's German/Italian/British/domestic/whatever...

I rode in a 996 GT-2 a few years ago and my 3 impressions were that it was large, it was built like a bank vault, (a little surprised there), and it was fast in a way that makes older 911s seem like garbage trucks in comparison. And smooth, like a turbine.

Why limit yourself to only one type of automotive experience? We are living in the ultimate age for a car nut; the basic invention is 100 years old and pretty much all iterations are now present+ fuel prices will soon remove the last enjoyment of the hobby. It cracks me up when young people talk about the car they want to own or buy in ~10 years here, are you kidding?? It's over, baby. Get out and burn that last few gallons.

After driving a 996TT, I was planning to sell my 993, add 30K, and get the TT.

Then I started thinking hard about what it would be like to park a 60K car at work, Home Depot, and the kids' daycare lot.

I'm going to keep the 993 and get a Mitsu EVO for the same money as one TT. Not quite as fast, but man, the EVO is a beast of a car for 30K. And four doors with two child seats in the back. Speeder's right - there are just so many great choices for fast cars these days.

Z-man 03-13-2007 02:15 PM

Ah yes -- the 996TT -- best handling car -- in a straight line.

I had the opportunity to drive a friend's TT at Pocono raceway for a DE session. Boy was it a pig in the corners. Lots of understeer. Granted, I was going 20-30 mph faster at the end of the straights than in my 944S2 without really pushing the car, but I prefer to play in the corners anyway... :D

That's funny, Hurley Haywood set a track record for production cars with a stock 996 tiptronic when they came out.

Can't remember the circuit, the 'Ring maybe?

As far as non-daily driver cars go, I absolutely limit myself to only one type of automotive experience.

The experience that I like.

speeder 03-13-2007 03:51 PM

Hey, it takes all kinds. Someone has to drive the slow cars. ;)

the 03-13-2007 03:57 PM

I have several cars, one of them (one I drive every other day or so) would certainly give a 996TT a decent run for the money, in any performance category.

But it weighs 2300 lbs, does not have a too light clutch, refined compliant suspension, would not be considered civilized by most, and is certainly not a "nice GT" car.

But 2300 lbs and 350 hp ain't slow!

island911 03-13-2007 04:10 PM

c'mon the, Denis has been sore ever since selling his SC. For that (and his Liberal misgivings) we give him some slack to lash out. :D

the 03-13-2007 04:19 PM

LOL, just having some fun, Denis is a good guy in my book.

He's right, it takes all kinds, I can certainly see where MOST would like a 996 or a 996TT. I recognize that I'm the oddball in not having any remote desire to own either, no matter how fast Hurley Haywood can take it around a German racetrack.

pwd72s 03-13-2007 04:25 PM

A friend once emailed, stating that if he was going to buy a water cooled car, he wanted it to be a make that was always water cooled. ;)

Hey, all in good fun. I just like giving people crap around here, it's my pastime, if you haven't noticed. Once in a while I even get some back. :)

911boost 03-13-2007 06:40 PM

I looked at and drove a couple of 996TT's when I was looking for my next 911 (more specifically a turbo). Having a 911 I could take to work a couple of times to week (60 miles each way) was also a factor when I was looking. The 996TT fit the bill in the everyday category, but to be honest, it was too boring at speed, if that makes any sense.

Plus, one of my favorite things about driving a 911 is the way the hood and front end looks like when you are driving that. I just didn't feel it with the 996TT.

If you are serious, go lurk on the Rennlist 996TT Forum. It is pretty active.

Now that my 964 Turbo is running great, I would be curious to see how it stacks up against a 996TT, taking into account the 10 years worth of age difference.

My BMW is much more fun to drive.

89911 03-13-2007 08:52 PM

A 996 Turbo would be the perfect car for a 75-100 mile commute on the highway where you could do 150mph, listen to a cd, and check your navigation. Other then that, I'd choose a car that you could get the most out of in manner in which you drive.

K. Roman 03-13-2007 09:34 PM

I'm with you Harddrive. I absolutely love the 996TT. No matter what people say on this board, the TT is one of the best/fastest, most equipped car for the price. They are being had for relatively cheap and are beautiful cars too. It will pull away from pretty much everything on the road and this is with a stock set up. You can get PSS9's and an aftermarket exhaust that you like, chip it and be up to 500hp in under 4000 dollars.

campbellcj 03-13-2007 11:06 PM

Honestly I think a 99xTT would be a great daily-driver for me. My commute takes me over Malibu Canyon (~8 miles of twisties), down PCH to Santa Monica, and back. Reserved parking spot at work and garage at home.

I have really gotten used to the AWD turbo driving style/feel from my Audi and not sure I'd want to go back.

The 997C4 does look sweet though. A new 997 vs. a used high-end 996 would be a tough decision as I really like the 997 (and 993) styling better.

Its interesting how the 996 styling is almost an anomaly. If Porsche has went directly from the 993 to the 997, the history books would make more sense:)

Still, I can't imagine buying a 997, not until they are starting to come off the 4 year leases, and the prices drop. I could buy a new 997 at this point, but why? To show off the the few people I know that would actually know the difference between a 996 and a 997? Nah. I'll let some other sucker take the depreciation hit thanks!

I just gotta love the comments from the curmudgeons on this board who feel that the 996 is too comfortable. If it doesn't shift like a truck, and leak oil, its not a real Porsche dammit! 915 mafia unite! ;)

Sad but true. In ten years, the only Porsche you'll be able to buy will be a V6 Cayenne hybrid.

89911 03-14-2007 04:07 AM

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 996 Turbo. A few of the big money track guys that belong to our group ditched their RS Americas and 993 Turbos when this came out and brought them to the track. I drove in one at Watkins Glen and the power was surreal. I was doing speeds on parts of the track that I had to check the Speedo to believe. And their, in my opinion, lies my problem with the car. It was almost like I was being flown around the track in a helicopter. I felt isolated. I can go half as fast in my car and it feels twice the speed. Invigorating. If it was me looking for a later Porsche, I would opt for a Caymen and get the most out of how you would drive it on a daily basis.

911boost 03-14-2007 10:05 AM

Hardrive,

By no means did I mean to say it was too comfortable (because it wasn't, they are too small with modifying the seat for my lanky, goofy, 6-4 frame), nor did I say they weren't fast. A Z06 is also fast, but I won't drive one.

I have had teh 996 discussion with someone who is very well respected on this board, and he would love to have one, says they are great and capable car, which I agree with. The look just doesn't do it for me.

So for me, a 400 hp 911 turbo that still looks like a 911, was a no brainer choice for me.

I agree with you though, I wouldn't buy a new 997, let someone else take the hit. And seriously, go over to the Rennlist 996TT forum, there are some insane cars in there.

Bill

snowman 03-14-2007 06:34 PM

Is this forum about cars or bucks? Who cares what someone had to pay for driving it the first year out of the box. If the car is good, really good, its worth the price. The point; is the car worth it or not. If its good, its worth buying now, not four years from now. In four years there might be a much better car and you will be looking at obsolete technology in the 997.
