Anachronistic Sayings

Heard someone on the radio today refer to, "a woman of Middle Eastern descent..." I thought, "I haven't heard that expression in years". I'm hispanic and when I was a kid I was "...of Mexican descent". It got me thinking of other throw back terms and expressions.

I'm 52. Remember the saying, "Oh they HAD to get married"? Huh? To younger people today they'd ask what the hell THAT means?

Great cars were, "Aw man, that is so cherry" - Stupid, huh? But "amazing" is so articulate! Every friggin thing is "amazing".

I wondered if you guys remembered these and others. Regional ones are probably a hoot too. Let's hear what you've got! Make sure they're "amazing":D

I'm 33 and I used your sayings. Some things just work.

Peace is our Profession. War is just a hobby.

Well, sort of...

"He better make an 'honest woman' out of her."

"Wow; that's radical."

"Peace."

I think "cherry" is still used to describe something really cool or new. (I'm 31)

What about "rad"? My favourite one from the 80s.

masraum 03-15-2007 06:22 PM

cherry isn't quite anachronistic.
Neither is "dude"

how about knarly and b!tchin'

That saying's not old, just regional--people use it all the time here in Boston. Kinda like "hella" in the Bay Area.

That's what's up: you could use this for practically everything.

"Hey remember me, sarah?" "that's what's up"
"so i'll be finished at around 4pm" "that's what's up"
So i'll see you tomorrow" "That's what's up"

I hear it alot from Detroit folks...

red-beard 03-16-2007 01:57 AM

"Have a nice day."

"Yes, Sir." or "Yes, Mamm."

Calling older adults, emphasis if you are children, by "Mr" or "Mrs." whatever.

Using the male equivilent to miss: "Master"

There are a million "ethnic" ones.

A billion euphamistic ones, say remember when the PC word was "Handicapped" because the non-PC word was "cripple"?

on2wheels52 03-16-2007 03:54 AM

I remember when 'fags' were cigaretts.

In response to a "thank you":

"You're welcome" instead of "no problem."

azasadny 03-16-2007 04:18 AM

Don't bogart that joint
"Pardon me" when you didn't quite hear what someone said
