dont you hate trying to buy a car that is flying off the shelves?

i have been thinking of getting a car. keeping my truck for yard-duty, my 911 for fun duty, and getting a mazdaspeed3 for daily duty. (never thought i would have 3 vehicles. sheesh). i went to the dealer and he told me he will not budge from the $27k. even edmunds shows MSRP at 24k. damn.

i guess i have to wait.

The Toyota dealer here has a 5000 upcharge for limited availability on the FJ - what a joke! The funny thing was that he had 15 on the lot.

Don't do it. You will hate yourself later.

These things are passing fancy on mass production cars like that.

CRX's, Miata's, WRX's - then STI's, SMART cars, I could go on and on.

Wait it out.

The used market is definitely showing signs of softening. This time last year it was as you described, but this year prices have really dropped. Just bought a 2006 for my wife with 13K miles on it for $4000 less than the first owner paid for it new 11 months ago.

Don't do it, vash. As cool as the car may be, $27K is WAY too much to pay for a MazdaSpeed 3.

i personally tell dealers that mark up over msrp that they will never see me again, and that i will be sure to let all my friends know their buisness practices.
its the same old hack that stupid dealers do...they have had years of product that they discounted and now that they that they have something good to sell...they get greedy and cause that product to sit. perfect example is the solstice..great car, nice price but the dealers are adding an "adjusted market value" upcharge of $10000 on them...so they just sit unsold. I cannot tell you how many leftover solstices i see because of that...and GTO's, and 300's and SRT4's and EVO's etc...

My worst case was when I paid list price on my, then, new 1972 Nissan 240Z, which were waiting list items. The dealer I bought from, who I later met socially, never sold above list as a matter of business.

I've never paid list again, usually significantly lower than list. Buy from a dealer that will sell you the car for a good price, go ooutside the SF Bay area, even as far as Redding, Paso Robles, SLO, or other area. There is no shortage of dealers that want to sell you a car.

#1 rule for me...NEVER pay "additional dealer markup". Every high demand car becomes not such a high demand car as time passes. Cindy & I once checked out the Dodge Manum. First dealership we stopped at had $2K additional markup tacked on. We walked...today, about a year later, the lots are full of them, they are being discounted like crazy. We decided to keep the old Ford Ranger. We can always buy a new car, and the last time I checked, having $40K in a money market earmarked for that purpose wasn't against the law. Well, actually, it's $40K plus interest now, a year later...I read the mags every month, and there is absolutely nothing new out there that turns my crank. Not in that price range anyway. All are yawners...

Look at my other thread. My daughter just bought a Mazda 6 that listed for 20,000, for 14,000. Fully loaded, 23 miles, 2007. I dont know about the Mazda 3 but it seems strange that they would raise one and lower the other.

I feel for you guys on the west coast. I hear the Honda guys out there at tacking $1,500 ontop of the new Fit. Thats 10% considering the car only cost $14,445. I should know, I just bought one. Told the guy, no dealer installed options, no mark up, just sell me the car, please. Should be here in about 2 weeks. Pitures and review will be posted when it arrives.

I agree with waiting. I've seen 2006 RX8s being offered for $4K below list. Dealer dire straits is a good thing.

do the math on depreciation, driving a brand new car off a lot is a fools job. Buy a car that has all the records, factory warranty, and low mileage from the fool who drove it off the lot brand new. This will save you thousands. Besides, even if you bought it brand new it wouuld still be last years model within 8 months. If money is no object than disregard the above advice and go buy it brand new even if there is a steep markup.

just a 3cent perspective

Seems like the main attraction of the MazdaSpeed 3 is the acceleration. I can't see anywhere near $27K going into a car like that, and agree with your refusal to do so. There's a lot of other cars I'd rather have for $27K, or better values for a lot less, i.e. the Mazda 6 for $14K.

I have a WRX that I got for fun (on a screaming deal), but rarely hammer it under WOT anyway.
