2007 F1 Melbourne

How is Kimi 8 seconds faster than everyone else!?

legion 03-17-2007 08:09 PM

What's with all the spinning out?

legion 03-17-2007 08:18 PM

This is turning into a NASCAR race...

(Which is better than the standard follow-the-leader IMO.)

FastCarFan 03-17-2007 08:24 PM

How about Hamilton?! He had a fantastic start & has driven very well. He will be fun to watch as the season unfolds.

And I thought Massa might run with Kimi, but it appears he cannot.

Should be a great season, especially if McLaren can challenge Ferrari.

Rearden 03-17-2007 08:24 PM

I've been watching Speed channel tonight. A parade of really fast cars driving around the track. Aside from the start (great move by Hamilton), has there been any meaningful passes on the track? Too bad F1 can't put on a better show...

Excuse me? When was the last time in the modern era you saw a Nascar race where the leader lapped all but five cars?

Nope....this is more like watching a Solo 1 or time trial.

Admittedly, the technology and talent is there. The onboards of cornernering speed is astounding...defies the senses. But that wasn't much of a race.

Let me agree with you. Lewis Hamilton did a fantastic job, imagine racing with your heroes and getting on the podium with them! Great job. I was extremely impressed with his composure in the interview room as well as how he did on the track. Good Job. Please make this an interesting season Lewis!

Sweeeeeeeeeet! Good for Kimi! Rooting more for Alonzo/Hamilton here (I'm partial to Mercedes/McLaren and I happen to like Alonzo), but great job by Kimi!

plenty of nascar to watch...

geez, some of you guys are such whiners. F1 is boring becuase they don't pass. Nascar is boring because they only go around in circles and have too many yellows.

Maybe rent some football games to watch or something.

lisa_spyder 03-17-2007 11:17 PM

Well we had no full course yellows (I think; wasn't home for all the race), no pace car, no major incidents (nearly when Coulthard drove over the top of Wurz  ), picture perfect weather, great crowd etc etc....

Yeah Kimi drove a 99.9% perfect race - I expected that! To be consistently that much faster than your nearest competition of course means no action up front - BUT HE ACTUALLY SMILED A FEW TIMES!!! I like him and he seems to have fitted into the Ferrari team very well. Lots of great body language between him and Jean Todt - good vibes between them.

The McLarens actually did better than I was expecting (happy about that). Hamilton is a breath of fresh air to F1 and will be the one to watch. He seems to be a great kid with an very proud Dad who also gets along well with his team.

What about Massa's charge from last to 6th?

Maybe it's the fantastic coverage we get here - our local network 10 does a great job. Big group of knowledgable presenters; we even get the great Murray Walker for the 4 days of the F1 circus down here. For us it wasn't boring; not as exciting as some I've seen or been to sure, but definitely not boring. But I really think some of that is attributed to the coverage we get too :) .

nostatic 03-17-2007 11:26 PM

The speed crew is good. I really like Matchett, and have read two of his books, working on the third. The video coverage is the international feed and is great.

I'm actually watching parts of it again. I find plenty of subtlety to keep me interested. I just love the cars...200mph works of art.

"..Aside from the start (great move by Hamilton), has there been any meaningful passes on the track? Too bad F1 can't put on a better show..."

I thought the "pass" by Coulthard on Wurz was pretty spectacular - the move was actually over the top, sort of speak.

They played the move back from at least 3 angles. The view from Wurz's rollbar camera was pretty exciting. I hope he was wearing diapers at the time.

Sherwood

lisa_spyder 03-17-2007 11:56 PM

Sherwood it was damned close that's for sure...we got replays from all sorts of angles and every one looked worse than the one before  .

After the race, there were a lot of crosses to the F1 paddock for "walking interviews" with the drivers, team bosses etc. Wurz was interviewed and said that Coulthard's "people" had already contacted the team saying he wanted to make a personal apology. Wurz was his usual understated self about it - spoke highly of Coulthard, but suggested it (the move) didn't do him (Wurz) or the team any favours for the weekend...we then got footage and heard the apology from David to Alex - nice hug, lots of apologetic gestures, shook hands, smiles all round...wonder what happened when the cameras weren't rolling ;) ...
