When I was 15 and wanted to learn to drive a stick shift, dad said he'd teach me.

The hitch: I wasn't allowed to drive dad's VW cabrio until I could explain the workings of the engine, transmission and suspension. I had to read the factory repair manual, because if I broke anything, I would have to fix it myself.

I doubt he really would have allowed a 15 yr old to touch his brakes or transmission, but it sure gave me appreciation for machinery.

You're a lot less likely to abuse a machine if:
1) You know how it works
2) You'll have to fix it if it breaks

There is a big difference between driving hard and downright abuse.

I'll bet this bozo would be the first to whine when the engine lets go or the diff breaks (I'll take bets on diff first).

I'd take the same view no matter what the car is (within reason). The guy has no mechanical sympathy; I don't tolerate that well.
