I was in Vancouver yesterday.
They are playing very well and have a shot this year. It was fun to be in a bar full of hockey fans watching a winning team again

Tonight is the make or break meeting--we all have our fingers crossed. What really sucks is the adversarial attitude which has been adopted by Rendell. He is a major-league douchebag jackass. You can bet anything that if the Flyers were in a similar situation--this deal would have been accomplished months ago--or the slots liense would have origianlly went to the Isle of Capri--who had promised a FREE 290 million dollar facility without any taxpayer or state contributions.

The whole situation makes me sick.

PS--Rendell is a douchebag.(warrants repeating )

Sorry, I'm a huge Pens fan but Rendell isn't the problem. The greed of the billionaire owners is the problem. Rendell is responsible for the tax money of ALL Pennsylvanians, something that Lemioux and his billionaire partner seem to care little about. The Pens are making alot of money now and have been offered a great deal and they are just interested in squeezing the state (read: you and me) for every penny they can. Corporate welfare at it's finest.

If they move to Las Vegas...will the Penguins change their name to
Las Vegas Sequins? Has sort of a Liberace ring to it...

I dont think LV could support the team with enough fan attendance
but I could be wrong too...

Rendell and the politicos ARE the problem. This entire debacle can be traced abck to 3-4 years ago when the Pens were intially attempting to get a new arena--they were told in no uncertain terms that there was zero government/state/tax dollars available for this purpose--this is of course after tax money was used to build PNC Park and Heinz Field--the Pens were told they were on their own--so fast forward to the slots license issue--all of the candidates were creating their proposals and the Pens teamed up with Isle of Capri casino--if IOC was awarded the slots license--they guaranteed 290 million dollars for a new arena-in addition to retail/office development in the hill district. NO politicians offered public endorsement of this deal--which would have guaranteed that the Pens stay and Pittsburgh would get a new multi-use arena cost-free. Rendell, O'connor(mayor at the time), Onarato--nobody offered any type of endorsement--the only one who did wa Swann who was running for governer against Rendell. Well, when the "gaming license board" met--under wraps with no public hearings, input--they decided to award the license to Don Bartlet--Prior to the award, the politicos were all saying publicly, "don't worry if IOC doesn't get the license, there is a "plan B" to get an arena" So, now magically, there is government/tax money available for an arena--when the Pens were told--no there isn't you are on your own. So, then everything is fine and chummy--meetings took place months ago(around Dec/Jan) both sides agreed to keep it out of the papers, both sides emerged appearing to be close to a deal--1 more meeting and all would be finalized--then the politco side begins giving public information--even stating publicly(Rendell's spokesman) that they are appraoching the negotiation as an adversary, and not as a mutually beneficial negotiation. Rendell even slams his hand upon the table ala Kruschev. His latest statements prior to last nights' meeting were "Well, if they decide to move, I will just go to NY and deal directly with the commisioner of the NHL to block the move"
Bottom line is this--the polticians screwed the Pens 3 years ago, then screwed the Pens(and taxpayers) again rejecting the IOC bid, and are now jerking thema round again in regards to the "Plan B". The Pens ownership has every reason to be skeptical--and Rendell does NOT have "all Pennsylvanians" best interests in mind--he cares mainly about Stinktown Philly--as I said before he is an arrogant jackass douchebag, he should return to stinktown and stay there.(although revenstahl and Onarato are also culpable in this entire mess too).

rant over.

Sorry, as I understand the history of this the Pens WERE to be included in the funding of PNC / Heinz Field but Howard Baldwin, owner at the time, wasn't interested. As far as the Slots Board is concerned, I don't know what relationship they have with Rendell or what influence he has on them; any would be improper in my mind. I thought the Isle of Capri was best for the Pens also but they apparently thought it wasn't the best deal for the State.
