Big thanks to Corvette owner
 

I went to visit a girlfriend of mine at the weekend and offered to clean and polish her car so I could take the opportunity to do the same to my 911.

Well, I've met the guy across the street from her a couple of times and he has a very tidy garage and a new Corvette, latest in a line of several that he's owned. He's most definitely a 'Car Guy' and he'd been asking for a while when I was going to be bringing my 911 over. Anyhow, there I was Saturday afternoon washing my girlfriends car and he comes over to look at my Porsche in the garage. He seemed quite impressed and suggested that if I washed the Porsche next he'd come over Sunday and help me wax it as he had a tin of Carnuba wax that he doesn't use on his plastic car.

So Sunday - good to his word - he came over and we talked cars for a hour or two while we gave the Porsche a top-notch shine. I thought it was only fair to let him take it out for a drive after that so he could experience the car we'd been working on. I'm guessing that it was probably his first time driving a 911 from some of his comments and observations. He thought he could easily get used to it after a while and I think he really enjoyed it.

When we got back he suggested I took his 'Vette out. Now, my parents always told me it was rude to refuse an invitation - so I had to do it, but was that thing FAST! He has a aftermarket exhaust on it with straight through cats and a few little tweaks that he reckons pushes it over 450bhp. I'd guess he's being a little conservative there as I reckon I probably only used about 3/4 of them and it still went like stink and made all the right noises. I couldn't stop grinning, it was awesome.

So, thanks to Frank for giving me my first drive in a Corvette, and I hope I did a reasonable job of giving him an appreciation of the 911 in return. Now about those extra mods you were talking about...I think there may be a few fun weekends ahead.

I'm sure the power of the Vette is nice, but I'm sure you can get a ticket just as quickly as he can. That red makes the car look like it's speeding just sitting still.:)

I'm a Corvette convert, too. I had never driven one until last year, and then I drove a friend's mildly prepared 87 set up for autox. I had a blast -- it was so much more tossable than I would have expected.

Someday a Z06 and a 911 like yours for me . . .

My wife drives the vette, I drive the Porsche. Life is good! :D

I've talked about getting a Corvette. Cindy replied that she refuses to bleach her hair and get a boob job....so, I guess a 'Vette is out of the picture.:(

Cops pick out the car they want, which explains why the mini van in the next lane going 15 mph faster than me did not get a ticket but I did.

My five over does not equal some soccer moms 20 over, go figure.

I have to confess that I was suprised how nice the 'Vette was. That said, I got a drive in a 911 GT3 last summer and I know which I'd pick given the choice.
The only thing that really bothered me about the 'Vette was the amount of electronic/electrical gadgetry involved. Everything - even the door opening mechanism - is electric. HUD was nice though and suprisingly usable. I can imagine that all the electronics will be a pain in the ass a few years down the road, but maybe growing up with British cars leaves that impression!

:D HAHA!!!! That cracks me up! I actually LOVE Corvettes and so does Steve but the mental imagery that Cindy offers really strikes a chord...

A millenium yellow six speed roadster can come live at our house anytime. But if we were short on garage space, the 'vette would sit outside so the cabby or the spyder could sit inside. Gotta have your priorities, right?

I had a 64 Corvette roadster just before I bought the 911 I have now. I like them both, just different cars. My wife never felt the need for the cosmetic upgrades.

My wife drives a stick Honda--like a maniac. It's scarey.
But she has no interest in sports cars. Too conservative for her.

My friend let me drive his C4 last summer. He brags on it constantly, so I thought I would enjoy giving it a spin around the compound.

Sorry, but if his car is any indication of corvettes as a whole, I'll stick to my old 911.

c-4 = 912

c-6 = 930 that runs all the time, and cost .30 on the dollar to use

I don't think so. I've driven a few C4's, all later model, all very cool cars and a lot of fun.

My friend's '96 LT4 powered GrandSport optioned 'Vette is no 912. I don't see comparing 330 HP and a six speed to an anemic 4 banger.

Since my T project has been on stands, I've been in sportscar withdrawl -- so, I went to a local Chevy place to drive a C6 vette. I'd never driven a vette before. I was thoroughly impressed. Not really my cup of tea, but it's a formidible automobile. Great power, excellent ride, and bang for the buck is phenomenal. For Boxster money, you get a car that goes toe-to-toe with a modern 911. I agree that all the electronics did put me off a bit. Since then, I recommended it to my father who swaped his '01 S2K for a new vette. After more seat time, it is the real deal. Doesn't have that raw feel of a pre-1989 911, but then again, neither does the modern 911.

My retired airline pilot buddy tried to sell me his '94 'Vette ragtop after learning I'd grown weary of the '72 911S. White, 6 speed, red interior. Around 30,000 miles on it's clock. He prefers to drive his BMW or fly his plane, I guess. You know, there was a time in my life when I'd have loved having a 'Vette ragtop. That time has passed...

I bought a '06 c-6 with the performance handling package.

I looked @ the Caymen, Elise, 930's, later 911's, s2000, and nsx's

The corvette was by far the most ideal for me.

I still lust 911's

but I feel that the Corvette was the right choice for me.

as for the car, WOW it works great 20,000 mile 2 days at the track driven hard and zero problems and zero out of pocket expense to date other than oil changes.

the only mode that has been done has been to add a "z06" rear sway bar to remove the push from the factory.

An expert on Corvette's I am not, but the guy with the C6 has owned, if I recall correctly, something like 18 of them right from the 1954 model to this present one. I got to see all the models, photos, dealer stickers etc on the garage wall. He went through the history, telling me which ones he preferred and things like there was no 'Vette in 1983 and the '84 sucked, just like us Porsche guys can relate the the various incarnations of the 911 (except none of them sucked). He really knew his Corvettes it seemed. He's definitely does not fit the stereotypical owner that is portrayed above.

As the C4 would include '84 maybe the car cashflyer drove was one of those? I'm sure there are good and bad examples of everything. All I can tell you is that the C6 was an impressive machine.

To be honest I think a lot of credit needs to go to it's PO who took very good care of it. Maybe I'll tell the story about that soon...
