Out-Of-Work In Michigan: State Lost Nearly 20,000 Manufacturing

from an associate...

Out-Of-Work In Michigan: State Lost Nearly 20,000 Manufacturing Jobs Since February 2006
By Amy Radishofski, Staff Reporter, Manufacturing.net
Manufacturing.Net

Over the past 12 months, manufacturing in Michigan has lost 19,549 jobs, according to Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). It has also lost 2.3 percent of manufacturing employment since February 2006, bringing the total losses since 2001 to 116,000.

“The auto industry accounts for 24 percent of the state’s manufacturing employment, down 5.4 percent from last year,” said Tom Dubin, President of MNI. “Production cuts in this sector account for much of the plant closings and layoffs as suppliers to the big three automakers struggle to keep their facilities profitable.”

The report indicates that the relocation of companies is also a major contributor to the job losses, noting that 17 manufacturers with nearly 1,000 employees have moved to other states in 2006.

Michigan currently has 16,585 manufacturing companies with 827,094 employees. Most of the state’s manufacturing employment is in motor vehicle parts and accessories with 20 percent. Plastic products follows a distant second with 4.7 percent, according to MNI.

The state is 7th in the nation by number of manufacturing jobs, representing 4.3 percent of the nation’s industrial employment, the report added.

Detroit tops the list as the state’s largest industrial employer with 6.5 percent of the state’s manufacturing employment, but it slipped 3.7 percent from February 2006, the research showed.

Business Conditions Deteriorate Sharply For New York Manufacturers
By Tom Granahan, Editor in Chief, Manufacturing.net
Manufacturing.Net

Manufacturers might not love New York, at least this month.

New orders for manufacturers in the New York region fell sharply in March, as did indexes for shipments and unfilled orders.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said its general business conditions index plunged to 1.9 in March from 24.4 in February, its lowest level since May of 2005. The percentage of respondents reporting that conditions improved fell to 32 percent from 41, while the percentage reporting that conditions deteriorated rose to 30 from 17.

The new orders index plunged to 3.1 from 18.9, the shipments index fell to 18.5 from 27.1, and the unfilled orders index sank below zero, to -8.1.

Meanwhile, the prices paid index rose to 30.2 in March, with 30 percent of respondents seeing higher prices and none reporting lower prices. The prices received index eased slightly, but remained positive.

Despite the weakness in current conditions, the New York Fed said manufacturers are generally optimistic in their outlook. The future general business conditions index dipped just slightly, while the future new orders and shipments indexes moved higher.

As part of its monthly survey, the bank includes supplementary questions, and this month's asked how difficult it was for manufacturers to find workers with select skills. Across every category listed, manufacturers said it was modestly more difficult finding workers than in 2006. Workers with advanced computer skills were seen as the hardest to find, with a slight increase in the difficulty for finding workers who are punctual and reliable.

Manufacturers were also asked whether they were experiencing difficulty filling openings in particular occupational categories, and a slightly higher proportion than last year indicated difficulties finding production workers, sales workers, building maintenance personnel and business and finance workers.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve will release its closely watched manufacturing report later Thursday.

In Tejas there is plenty of growth, lots-o-work for Architects. Construction is our biggest industry.

I should add that Michigan is going to get much worse before it gets better. Many of the family owned or small companies here have been eating up equity just to stay in business for a couple years now. It's too bas as this really is a beautiful state but it's going to be one big Flint soon I fear.

Relocate, Len. Just don't come here. This state SUCKS unless your business is holistic pretzel logic or psychotherapy.

All options are on the table, I meet with lawyer tomorrow just so I know what our options are moving forward.

My brother in law was just offered a job in Tennessee making 2X what he is here as a machinist.

Meanwhile our Governor is most concerned with raising taxes. She just cannot find anything to cut.

Seriously though DD, you were really close to getting me 4 years ago when my wife was offered a great gig with Yamaha. If I only knew then......

I've thought of moving everything we do to Vegas. It'd be good to be near the casinos for our product. Plus more business friendly, and growth, like what Lubey says about Tejas.

Have you ever thought along those lines for what you do?

It's not all bad news, Len. In fact, just yesterday cool-chick was talking about how beautiful your Governor is. At least you have that.

Sorry to hear of the troubles with the business. Hang in there, brother. Hope it all works out for the best for you and your family (and all other Michiganders, too)

Randy

Thanks Randy, I'm not alone here in Michigan though it's real bad for just about everyone.

Yeah, it was uncalled for. Hey, just on a lark, how about moving everything to Canada? Can that be done? Helluva lot closer than TX.

Not on your life, if I move it will be south. Heck, even southern Indiana and Ohio would be OK. I really like Kentucky and the Carolinas as well.

Not quite, it's more complicated than that. The Republicans are trying to force spending cuts and Granholm is trying to raise taxes. It's a battle of wills right now.
