My hatred of Ohio State (or, as I like to call them, Southern Michigan University) notwithstanding, Brutus Buckeye looks like a turd nugget that has a chunk of corn embedded in it. He should be called a Butteye.

Not Div IA, but one of my favorites is The Delta State (Mississippi) FIGHTING OKRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol...actually it IS a big party school. For years they were the Delta State "Statesmen." About 16-17 years ago, a group of rowdy, drunk students decided to come up with something to cheer on their basket ball team that was undefeated....since they were from the south and the school colors were green, they tried to come up with something southern and green. They tried the fighting algae as a tribute to pond scum but that didn't work. Someone came up with "Fighting Okra" so the student body got together and began chanting "OKRA OKRA OKRA."

The coach thought they were shouting "OPRAH OPRAH OPRAH" as a racial epithet and had them ejected from the game. Next game they were back in full force with placards so no one would miss their frivolity. Ultimately it stuck and is now the unofficial mascot.

Ha, my best bud plays baseball for them. Will have to send this thread along to him. His g/f calls him her "little fighting okra." How ghey.

I think I've got a winner here. The Evergreen State College "Geoducks." Pronounced "gooey-duck."

Supe, did you see the Dirty Jobs episode with the geoducks? Funny stuff.

My faves:

Virginia Tech Hokies -- a Hokie is a castrated turkey.
U of Delaware Blue Hens -- the only female mascot

I remember the pep band at Louisiana Tech having a blast at a women's basketball game...They were Playing Tennesee, who has a HEAD coach by the name Pat Head Summit...I can't repeat what the band was requesting from the opposing coach, but they obviously rattled her to the point of her asking the refs to invervene. The local TV stations said the band was a large "contributing factor" to the game.

On another note: what if ex-LSU coach Pokey Chatman was to get a job coaching for Virginia Tech? The new fight song could go something like: "You put your right hand in, you take your right hand out" (Hokey Pokey)?

and just what kind of special person is it that volunteers for this duty? A tree? WTF?

I loved going to Ascot raceway when they had a flat track rider named Moorehead... you can imagine the chant that came up from the crowd. ;)

Stanford used to be the Indians, but that was not PC enough, so they became the Cardinal, their mascot is a color, which is tough to express, so they have a tree, redwood I believe, which does not have a heck of a lot to do with the color red, or cardinal I suppose.

Hey, Syracuse dropped "Orangemen" and are now just the "Orange". La(meh).

Otto the orange has got to be simultaneously the worst and best mascot (though the Buckeye is the worst overall, no doubt -- for the Ohio School of Doing Stuff).

Word is, SU was looking to replace Otto... then ESPN used him in a SportsCenter piece (one of the first featuring mascots) where he flew in in a helicopter to deliver some important sports news update. Waved and hopped in the chopper and took off.

He's been untouchable (and regularly featured in ESPN and other mascot stuff) ever since.

EDIT -- not a "worst" mascot, but in the inexplicable category, LeMoyne College in Syracuse has the Dolphin. Sure. Jesuit school in upstate NY, hundreds of miles from open water. And University of Central Florida has a Yeti as a mascot, Eastern Maine University are the Cacti, and San Francisco State are the Federalists.

My fave worst? The Oregon State University BEAVERS. Mascot name "Benny Beaver". Should be "Benita Beaver". But then, think of the poor cheerleaders for Arkansas..."GO PIGS!" :rolleyes:
