Oh, the bad news is now they want $360. I am going to fight it though. Look at the pic of the driver! Enjoy and feel free to render opinions....

My opinion is that you REALLY blew that light and you should pay. Period.
I won't act like a saint or anything on this, but that was REALLY a bad maneuver....could have got you hit or even worse. -Chris

By all accounts, car behind the 'no right turn' sign had a great shot at your passenger door (if he had the green light, maybe he did not).
At least you had the guts to post a boof move like that.

Two things:
1) It appears that your brake lights were on prior to entering the intersection. Did you decide just to "go for it"? 2) The sign in the intersection (top right of picture) appears to say it is a $240 fine, have they caught you before and that is why the fine is $360? BTW: Dumb move on your part, but we all have made mistakes, so you are not alone in that department. Nobody is perfect. The important question is, did you learn from your mistake?

Yeah... Get a haircut, grow a beard, and wear your Billy Bob's... I swear Your Honor, that's not me behind the wheel!
The fuzzy photo of you might be your escape... You did break the law, and you luckily made it through the intersection without causing a collision. Fortunately in most congested cities, there is about a 2 second delay from red to the other direction turning green...Hopefully this has been enough of a wake up call for you to pay closer attention to driving! I'm sure no one here has ever run a red light... I know I have, but those RARE events can certainly be tied to being distracted! If you are purposefully attempting to burn the yellow by accelerating from well before the intersection, you are really playing with fire. No affiliation, but try these links , for help.

What do you need an opinion of? Seems obvious. Those sunglasses blow.
This is the reason I use my "two car rule" when driving south of Santa Barbara. The light turns green, wait for two cars to run the red, then proceed. While looking for the third car.

1. you usually have to prove that it was NOT you -- find the city ordinance or state statute and read it carefully - claiming it was not you is a real loser - the suggestion to defraud the Ct. is I hope a joke - the Judge might be in a bad mood and send you to prison -- do NOT make things much much worse. judges expect to get lied to but every once in a while they snap to attention and lower the boom.
2. you can ask the city to maintenance div. to check and make sure the light operates correctly - if they say it does, you can still show that and say "Gosh Your Honor, I guess I was wrong -- I could have sworn it was yellow -- I'm really really sorry" You will lose but may get some lowered fine. if it was mistimed you should get off 3. if you ran a RED light PLEASE DON'T

I really hate that intersection, if you enter at all on a yellow (which is way too short for traffic conditions) they take a picture and you spend the next few weeks waiting on a ticket that never comes. That street is a 25mph zone that people go 35-40 in. Since the limit is so slow the yellow light is very brief.
Standard procedure for the traffic there seems to be approaching at about 20mph, then if the light is green really getting on the gas until you are clear. I'd be really interested in the traffic accident statistics since they put that camera in.

Shame on you! I'm guessing you were also speeding when the camera caught you, and therefore the $360.00. That would explain the brake lights, too, so you wouldn't run into whitey there. Jeez, just nutso, dude...
No sympathy from me, as I will never understand such blatant, ridiculous action. You need to change, man. As I said, you are not alone, because the other two vehicles shouldn't be in the intersection either. It must be quite popular there to attempt to kill people.

I went to traffic school a couple of years ago at the court house here in south OC. It was taught by a pretty nice guy who happened to be a retired Westminster city police officer. We talked at length about running reds and stop signs. It turns out that the authorities have zero tolerance for these offenses.
Why? Well, at least according to him, more deaths and serious injuries are caused by cars running red lights and stop signs than all of the other infractions combined, speeding, tailgating, etc. He talked about how otherwise good citizens have had their lives ruined, and I mean ruined, by the simple act of being impatient or not paying attention, running a red light, and hitting another car broadside or a pedestrian at high speed - not to mention the innocent victims of the red light runners. He mentioned how even if he saw a car run a red by just a tiny, tiny bit, he would pull them over, right them up (taking his time) and then ask these people if the one minute they thought they would save was now worth it. It now cost them 10 to 15 minutes to write them up, plus the cost of the ticket, plus the time lost dealing with it in court, plus the cost of increased insurance. His point was to make these people think twice about running a red light again, just to save maybe a minute. The consequences could have been almost unfathomably worse had they caused an accident. He asked all of us to think about that, and I had to agree with him. Running a red light is NEVER ok. And, no, I do not run reds - ever. By the way, nesslar, in California at least, it is legal to be IN the intersection when the light turns red, however, it is illegal to ENTER the intersection after the light turns red. Important distinction. Last edited by 450knotOffice; 11-30-2006 at 12:38 PM.. |

Just pay the fine, this is something you can't beat unless you had reported the car stolen before the photo and you can show pictures of the car stripped after it was towed of of some side street. Lucky for you it wasn't stolen.

We can agree that an intersection is probably the most dangerous place to be on the road with cars coming at you from every direction. So if we could minimize our exposure in said intersection we could be better off. Like avoiding them would be a good thing. How about the amount of time you spend in an actual intersection? Would you agree a car going 25 MPH is in the intersection 4X longer than a car going 100MPH? I rest my case.

If people run red lights they are telling me two things:
They are not in control of their vehicle and/or they think their time is more important than anyone else's. I have no pity if they are caught for their offense.

Yep...sorta....
Scott,
I know, I know. Here yellow means "stop", and probably, actually, it does in California, too. Here it says so right in the book at the DOL, the very book we all supposedly learn from when we are applying for a license. It doesn't mean "go like hell." Still, I don't know of many people who obey that rule. Nor is the rule ever enforced to my knowledge. Nonetheless, if hurrying to get through the yellow and into the intersection before the light turns red had not become such a national pastime, ultimately leading to outright running of reds (such a great fad) we'd all be better off, wouldn't we? Duh. That blue Porsche needs to be in more responsible hands. Or he can revise things. And lose the shades......
