Why are they called "insurgents"?
Sure, there were traditionally-defined insurgents in the beginning of this conflict (the "Baathist holdouts", mostly). Now these car bombers and death squad psychopaths are often hate-filled thugs out to kill people following the wrong branch of Islam. Yet the media refers to them all as "insurgents". Are the media simply trying to be inoffensive?

Politically correct, you are.
Don't offend Islam, or the idiots that preach this destruction to the infedel bull*****. How stupid..... |

Another definition of insurgent is one who rushes in to fill a power vacumn. If they can keep things from settling down, they stand to grab some of the power.
Politics with guns and explosives. Les |
Someone who randomly kills women, children and innocent men on the street with a IED is an insurgent? I call him a ******** murderer.

I thought it was sick before but now using innocent children to futher your sick ways is simply unbelieveable. |
It's relativism to equate a random killer of civilians with someone who is specifically fighting an opposing army in plain clothes.
The former is a terrorist, the latter is an insurgent in my book. It just shows the moral vacuum of much of the press who are more afraid of making a value judgement then of pandering to the biggest headlines. |

Fast paste from Wikepedia for you confused American kiddies - see if you can find the hidden answer(s):
"An insurgency, or insurrection, is an armed uprising, or revolt against an established civil or political authority. Persons engaging in insurgency are called insurgents, and typically engage in regular or guerrilla combat against the armed forces of the established regime, or conduct sabotage and harassment in the land in order to undermine the government's position as leader. An insurgency differs from a resistance both in its political overtones and in the nature of the conflict: an insurgency connotes an internal struggle against a standing, established government, whereas a resistance connotes a struggle against invading or occupying foreign forces and their collaborators." This is in fact, champagne comedy if you think about it. |
