Shill bidding in action.

Look at the bid history on this item: 170093675333

There's no way you can tell if shill bidding is (or is not) going on in that auction.

?????

You can't be serious. Look at the accounts that were used to bid, and the increments of the bids. Three total newbie accounts, and they all decide to bid in $10 increments?

Sorry, don't see it.

Bidder 1 has bid on 83 total items, this is the FIRST one with this seller.

Bidder 2 has been around 4-5 years, bid on 4 items, first with this seller.

Bidder 3 is a newbie, but has bid on 9 items, first with this seller.

Bidder 4 won the item.

Bidder 5 has bid on 26 different items, with 24 unique sellers.

The SELLER has been around for a year and a half and been very, very busy. He has 1,420 positive feedbacks in that time, that means he's probably done close to 2,000 transaction. I doubt a big seller like this has time to "create" any of those 5 bidders above to try to drive up this relatively small value auction.

No way you can tell there is a shill in this auction.

That may not what the bidding shows.
I would guess the bidding was on the level. As an Ebay seller the risk of suspension is too high and he obviouly is a prolific seller.

I'm sorry guys, I am a total moron. Frankly, its been a while since I have looked at a bid history, and I didn't realize they hid details these days. I glanced at it and thought they were all new users.

Just got myself a screaming deal on turntables......

There are a lot of these "fear of the evil eBay" type threads around here, and 10 times out of 10 the people complaining do not understand how eBay works.

Oh, there is plenty wrong with eBay. But shill bidding is the biggest non-issue in its history. It is basically a sealed auction, with the advantage to buyers that you do not actually have to pay the full amount of your sealed bid unless it's necessary to beat the person in 2nd place. In case this isn't clear, you bid the maximum that you are willing to pay, as late in the auction as possible if you are smart. Who cares about shill bidders?? How would that affect the maximum that you are willing to pay for something?

It does not affect the max that one is willing to pay. It does affect what you ulitmately pay. You may have gotten it for less.

It's also a way for a seller to set a "reserve" without having to pay the additional listing fee.

Shill bidding can effect the way you view a seller.

I had a chance to identify a shill bid scheme when I was buying jewelry a few years back.

The scheme worked like this.
The seller offered for sell high end diamond items at no or very low reserves. They were always sold at what appeared to be a wholesale relative price. They also sold some lower priced items. The lower priced item were some of the Hong Kong mass produced junk you will quite often find at the flea markets.
The high end jewelry gave the seller what looked like credibility and misrepresented his connection to the legitimate jewelry industry.
I recognized the junk and bid on the quality items. I began to notice that the same three bidders were winning all the "good" items. Then I noticed that the "good" items were being relisted.
The scam was simple, have shill bidders bid on items you don't even have giving you credibility you don't deserve. Then the phony bidders would leave incredible feedback. Harmful ? not terribly. Dishonest? of course.

In this case, I didn't put close to what I was willing to pay. I put an absurdly low bid, and I won.
