Random junkyard pics

Went to an old junkyard yesterday to help a buddy look for a big block Ford (found a 390). There were some interesting cars but most too far gone. A 924 with a maple tree growing through the shifter hole should produce some maple syrup soon.

We had a similar junk yard here in the Charleston, SC area. It was all grown up, but full of 1950s and 1960s cars. The old man who owned it died and the heirs just scrapped everything to sell the property quickly.

The property was worth a whole lot more than the cars, but they threw away literally tens of thousands of dollars worth of cars/parts. They had a garage on the property and I saw a dumpster filled with boxed (new?) parts pulled out from the garage.

It made me sick to see such waste, but I simply didn't have the time or money to take any action. I talked to the real estate agent involved in the sale and tried to get him to tell the owners they were throwing away money. I talked to the operator of the lift loading the cars for their trip to the scrap yard and he said he was trying to tell his boss there was more than scrap value to some of the stuff, but nobody wanted to think a little "longer-term" -- it was all just a case of "turn it into cash the quickest way possible," which was to scrap it.

That sort of near-sightedness is a shame, but it happens every day. Think of all the mid century furniture that is throw away daily. My aunt used to buy chairs at an auction (she's passed on now) just within the last 5 years that were Eames, Miller or high end Milan design stuff for 2 to 5 bucks a pop. Municipalities would empty entire offices so they could spend more tax money on crap, throwing the baby out with the bath.

I digress, sorry. I love junk yards. my favorite is in Mumford AL and has all the old farm tractors, John Deere, FarmAll, IH, you name it.

I could spend hours and hours in an older junk yard, alot of the good ones that were around when I was a teenager are gone. Around here old cars are a popular spot for snakes all of which are harmlesss, I am thinking one would have to be careful in some of the southern areas?
I have some other good junkyard photos but will have to scan the negatives.

Yes, funny mention on the snakes. When I went to the tractor yard, I asked if I could wander about. They said fine, but watch out for the snakes. I guess they sensed right away I was from CA, or somewhere other than AL, to mention it. If they hadn't, I probably would have gotten bit. Stupid California city boys.

Followed up a a lead last summer and got 2 buses for $100, as well as a bunch of other misc odds and ends.
