Lightbulb grabbed a 964

Hi everyone,

after going through three Porsches (1967 912, 1984 911SC Convert, 1980 911SC Targa) in the last 5 month I finely found what I really liked!

This is my dream car and it only has 92k miles. It looks nearly perfect, drives like a dream and pulls pretty strong over 5 or 6 rpm!

When I first got it, I thought "great ... great price, but okay the allignment is off you have to get that fixed." Next gasstation I put some air in the tires and bingo the allignment was fixed!
Then at the same gas station this guy asked me, if I want to sell it and he'd think I probably paid 30 Grand for it
YEAH right - this is what I want. I hope the prices for the 964s will go up silly! And NO, I won't sell it!
I would bet anyone here, that these cars will become more desireable (same with the 993)! As you all know - it is the last AIRcooled 911 with bugeyes ... the last Porsche!

Thx for looking ! More thanks for commenting !!!

Didn't know that, so did Porsche go to air-cooled 911s after they ended the water-cooled line?

I see you're so excited, you can't even type straight!

Looks like a nice buy.

Very nice car. My first ride in a 911 of any sort was in a 964 that looked exactly like yours. Around Shannonville's Fabi circuit it was just as fast as an NSX that was there that day, and that's quite a compliment.

I assume when you say you went through those other 911's in the past 5 months you mean you test drove them, not that you bought them?

I've got a garage queen '90 C2 with 34k on the clock that I've had since 2000. It's pretty mint (I've got the trophy's and score sheets to prove it) and only goes to concours events. I've stopped driving it a lot so it holds on to a bit of value.

I've had several unsolicted offers for the car and two appraisals from experienced 911 brokers. Based on those facts, I could almost make money on this car (not factoring in interest that could have been made if the money was invested instead of sitting in a dumb car).

While this car will never (and I mean never) be as desireable as the 1987 to 1989 G-50 equipped 3.2 cars and the 993's that followed, there seems to be a demand for very low mileage (mine's not all that low mileage either), near mint condition 964 C2's with limited slip in desireable colors. Even though mine is not perfect, I could sell mine in about 5 minutes if I wanted to.

However, they never will be collector cars and it'll take another 15 to 20 years before these things start to really appreciate. The 964's (while I personally love them) will always be looked upon as the ugly duckling of the 911 world right down there with the 2.7 cars just due to the heavy front bumpers and the motor issues that can happen. It's a stigma that will never go away.

I'd never buy a 964 for an investment unless you get to one of the more rare versions (America Roadster, Speedster, Anniversary ('94) car).

Atlantic: Welcome to 964 ownership. This color combo on your car is stunning in person. Your pic above doesn't do the car justice (that's a compliment!). You'll love the car. If they are well sorted, they are the bargin of the modern 911's.

Jay,

Could not disagree more...the 87-89 cars are nice but look clunky compared to a 964. Sorry, the bumpers on the 80's cars hold zero appeal to me.
I've owned a wide spectrum of Porsches and looked at 993's when I was looking to upgrade. They did nothing for me. The 964 did.
It is all about individual taste.
There are also no "facts" when establishing future value...

As always, YMMV

Seahawk,

I agree with you that the 964 is a better looking car to me than the 993.

However, just watching the market for the past 10 years or so, shows me that early 964s tend to be priced below late 3.2 cars and below 993's (as you would expect just due to age) if all other things are equal.

Your 94 is probably one of the best built 911's from 1989 to 1998. There were zero problems from the factory on the '93's and '94's. Very solid cars.

Again, I'm no expert, so this is all just subjective text that's free on the internet.

The only facts that I have are the ones that were solid offers on my car for almost what I paid for it 7 years ago. Sorry to mislead. I did not mean to imply I had facts as to what these cars will sell for in the future. It's all speculation.

Thanks for the good discussion.

Atlantic's car is still a good lookin' 964!

Jay,

You are right, got to focus on Atlantic's car...which is stunning. Having grown up in SoCal, I know he will enjoy the ride!
If I was a bit strident in my comments, it's because I talked with Speeder on the phone yesterday
Denis, I keeeed!
All the best, Jay...964's are, IMHO, simply incredible cars.

Angry thx!

Thanks for the comments guys and girls?! Seems to be a nice bunch here.

And yes - I cannot believe that I wrote watercolled - well that's alright - you guys know better.

Honestly, as you see below I still have my 911SC Targa which has the same body as all of them till 1989. I guess it is okay, but I find the 964 bumpers much more appealing. Doesn't have that ugly lip in the front. Ultimately it is a matter of taste - and my taste is just better
What counts is that you love yours!

Here are some pics for the comparison:

I would have to agree, at least to my taste the 964 bumper look much nicer IMHO.

But those turbo twist wheels have to go!

Yaeh! I think you are right! I was thinking of replacing them when a new set of tires is due, which will be soon. Maybe something 5-spoke, black evil-looking !?

I like the turbo twists on that car. Would never put them on anything older, but I had them on my 993 and loved them. Don't rush off getting something else.
